Cardboard box as baby's first bed?

100% agree with previous posters about second hand shops etc - also, Craigslist (just sanitize, wash, etc obviously)!!!! My cousin had twins and bought them each a bassinet, well the one never would sleep in the bassinet (only his crib) so she put it on Craigslist for like $20!!! The thing was brand new!!

However, nothing wrong with a (safe) drawer/box!! Same 4 sides as anything else :) baby will never know the difference!

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I'm in Australia, just arrived several months ago so we're still settling down and the flat we're renting is under contract for a year. Dh just got a job and though he is paid well, we accumulated so much debt from the bills.

I looked at ebay and placed some bids for a 2nd hand Moses basket or bassinet. They start around $30 but is continuously rising. One of our bids is at $60 already and the auction still has 4 hours to go. I think we don't want to spend more than $80 for a second hand item since Ikea has a cot for $80 and matress for $20.

Hey, which part of Oz are you in? I live in Sydney and I have a bassenette someone gave me that I'm giving away as my partner is very fussy about furnature & says it doesn't go with our bedroom (being a budding designer). It's a little large so not sure it would be suitable for a small room. Let me know if your close to Sydney

I'm in Victoria, very closed to Melbourne city. How much would be the shipping??

Thanks heaps for the replies..

Lost the auction which was ok since it sold for $80.

Gotta look after our pregnant sisters! We're pretty broke to, and its wonderful when people give us stuff.

Hey
I am on a local kids classified facebook page where mothers sell on things at really good rates. Might be worth having a search!

Just had a search on Facebook and there is 'Melbourne kids market place', and 'baby/toddler and kids western suburbs Melbourne'
I got a few things from the Sydney page. Worth checking out x

Thanks Dub.. I think it would be too selfish of me to get it shipped from NSW. There could be another mom living closer who could pick it up and use for her new bub.

I've sent an FB to our suburb/community of mums asking for pre-loved baskets. Said there might be a long queue in the waiting list.

How much would be a reasonable price to pay for a 2nd hand Moses basket from ebay. Today there are several auctions running and most are already above $100. I feel it's ridiculous because BabiesRUs sells a brand new basket for $50 (although that's in the US). Do you think this has anything to do with Australia's importing laws on baskets and basket materials. I remember when we arrived here last March, the customs officer confiscasted my handmade bamboo bag.

Looking back at our 'drawer project', I am also unsure if the baby could fit into it. It's only 53cm long and I read that babies at full-term have an average length of 50cm. I'm quite tall myself so I expect that my son will be around that size when he's born.

Amazon has a few for under 40 dollars. Do you have amazon there? The stands are 30-40 dollars too. So under 70-80 for both.

I'm originally from Wales in the UK and it feels like EVERYTHING here expensive! I go back to Wales to visit family and can't believe the prices there are so much cheaper.

Seriously if you find that the shipping cost is lower than buying let me know

Look on Gumtree! There is so many cheaper 2nd hand items there. No bidding just make an offer then go pick up

Thanks all for the suggestions.
