Our son Carson James came on 5/14/14 at 40+1 weighing 8lbs-4oz, 20.5in long. He's a beautiful, sweet baby - everything I dreamed of and more!
On my due date I noticed I lost my plug and it was streaked with blood. I woke up the next morning to more blood-tinged discharge so the Dr wanted to see me. I had an appointment that morning at 10:00am. Dr checked me and said that I was 4cm dilated, 90% effaced - "hanging by a thread" his quote lol, babys head was right there ready (and basically waiting on contractions to kick up) and that we could go ahead and head down to L&D (my drs office is located within the hospital - how convenient!). I was very surprised and not really expecting to go down right away because only 2 days before I was 2.5cm dilated and 50% effaced. So I called my husband, made arrangements for my son and of we went! I got checked in at labor and delivery at around 12:00pm, the dr came in to check on me. He said he had a c-section waiting on him so he urged the nurses to hurry up and get my IV going so he could break my waters. The nurses were annoyed he was rushing them, I was surprised too, but I suppose this was the induction route! If we all wanted convenience this was it - a timed, scheduled event!
I'm not against induction, but it does rush things! Anyway, dr broke my waters a short time later, suggested since the baby was ready "why not go ahead and start pitocin? Might as well have this baby by dinner, say 6pm rather than 9pm!" I said to go ahead and they got the pitocin going, we waited for contractions and my dr was off to a c-section. I informed the nurses I wanted an epidural for pain, and they said they'd let the anesthesiologist know and to let them know when I was in pain. Hubby and I joked that it was "boring" waiting around... Oh boy, was that the wrong thing to joke about... The contractions started to kick in and become more frequent about an hour later. The contractions were gradually getting worse, 3 mins apart, and I asked for my epidural. The nurses put in a call to him that we were ready. Thanks goodness they did! By the time he made it to my room (he was also in the c-section with my Dr) I was 7 cm dilated!! And in pain!! I hadn't felt contractions like that with my first son (also had an epidural, but much earlier). The contractions were brutal - I cried, moaned and squeezed the bed rails with each one. So I got my epidural between contractions...,BUT it didn't take
. Only one leg was partially numb. He said give it 20 minutes... Still nothing. So I'm having bad contractions, lots of pain, and thinking I wasn't going to have my epidural! The anesthesiologist came back, genuinely looked concerned about me, and we tried it again. This time it worked!! Except a little too well... I was completely numb. I had numbness the first time I gave birth, but this was different, I mean no feeling whatsoever - it was odd, and I was worried I wouldn't be able to push - but it was amazing to not have pain anymore! As odd as it sounds, I felt I had more control being completely numb from the waist down than being in so much pain every 3 minutes. So, after that the nurse came back with the catheter. After she placed it I immediately started feeling sick! I was light-headed and nauseous and told her I wasn't feeling well. My husband said I immediately went white as a ghost. I fainted and the nurse pushed an emergency button. Many people rushed in, my anesthesiologist came running in (with a small bottle of ephedra), and they stopped the pitocin, stopped the epidural that was still dripping and sat there staring at me. The anesthesiologist was ready to give me the ephedra, but about 2 minutes later, I came out of my "grog" and I said I was feeling much better. They all looked so relieved, my poor husband looked like he was then going to pass out, I'll never forget the look on the anesthesiologist's face - I think he was scared he'd killed me!! So, turns out my blood pressure dropped. The contractions were back to back, the epidural was way too strong - everything was on overload and my body couldn't handle it. Looking back, it makes me mad they could have put me and my precious son in danger- all this rushing around and jump starting the labor - it was too much, too soon. Moving along with the story - they let me rest for just a bit, my mom and sister came in to see me.... As they were in the room the ruse checked my cervix and said, ok it's time! I was surprised, it was only about 4pm so my mom and sister left so my husband and I could get this baby out! Doctor came in immediately and said to push on my next contraction. Well I was so numb I had no idea when I was contracting so the nurse said to push and I did! I pushed so hard and he was out! Just like that, one push and there he was! I was able to lean forward a bit as I was pushing and watched him slide right out! It was amazing! I smiled ear to ear and they laid him on my belly. He was beautiful right outta the womb!
while I was doing skin to skin my dr delivered the placenta, stitched up my second degree tear and all was good in the world! They soon checked him out, right in the room so I could watch - and gave him back to me! He was born at 4:05pm.
It was a super quick birth! Carson and I are doing great! He breasted like a champ the first 48 hours! After we got home the breast feeding got more challenging, he was having a hard time latching (lip toed like his brother), he was crying in hunger, and I decided to begin pumping and giving him breast milk through a bottle. This isn't exactly what I'd wanted, but there are some major perks about bottle feeding - he's still getting breast milk, My husband can help with the every 2 hour feedings, and I know how much he's drinking. Still I miss breast feeding, might give it another go, but just happy he's getting my breast milk for now!
The first night in the hospital was blissful, he slept and ate like a pro! We went home 24 hours later. The first night at home was very, very hard. Poor Carson was starved and cluster feeding, I was so sore and exhausted... But we survived! It's getting easier as the days go by.
Here's my sweet boy!
