I find out on Wednesday if I have got to have a c-section and frankly, the thought turns my stomach. Hubby keeps telling me not to worry (gah!) and my mum can't understand why I'm so against it because I was born by C-section. When I was told it might be a possibility it didn't bother me, but as it becomes more likely I am terrified.
Can you feel them putting in the catheter and taking it out? This is one of the things that makes my toes curl about having to have a c-section.
xxx

They will put the cath in after your spinal block so you wont feel a thing. I had an emergency section and didnt even know they had put one in!!!! As for taking it out its nothing to worry about. You cant hardly deel it coming out. I'm a nurse and i've taken hundreds of catheters out and its like a 2 second thing and no pain or anything. Please dont worry about it. Honestly you will hardly realise its going on. xxx

I actually had my catheter put in before I went to theatre and I felt exactly how you did, I was actually feeling sick esp when they said it was going in before my spinal, but to be Honest I barely felt a thing and it wasn't painful for what I could feel! And I am a big wimp!

I couldnt feel the catheter coming out! Stomach muscles v painful bt not catheter.

i had mine put in once i was numb so no feeling. having it out just felt weird not painful. i was relieved to get it out so i could move around!

My c-section was under general anesthesia, I didn't have time to have an epidural so was fully awake with no pain control when then inserted my catheter- I was terrified I remember yelling at the nurse to wait until I was knocked out from the anesthesia and she said she couldn't.. There was no need to be scared it really wasn't that bad going in! Taking it out the next day I felt a tiny pinch then nothing. You'll be fine hun. :)

Mine was put in after my spinal - I was really scared in case it would be put in first, but I asked to make sure it was put in after!! Having it taken out was nothing, I didn't even think she'd done it yet, but it was all over. It was just a bit like the feeling when you pull a tampon out. The worst thing for me was when she said I had to pee 100ml by 4pm or the catheter would be going back in :haha: Nothing like putting pressure on you!

Good luck :)

Mine was also put in after the spinal, it was my best friend and I didn't want it out after the 12 hours lol it was so great not to have to get up to pee every 5 minutes!

not didnt feel it in, had it after my spinal. they took it out when spinal wore off but i didn feel anything, well not that i remember.

I don't remember feeling them put it in but I did feel it coming out. It wasn't painful just a bit of a strange feeling for me.

Like others have said, mine was put in after my spinal so I didn't feel a thing. The nurse took mine out about eight hours later. It did burn a little, but wasn't too bad. I was ready to get outta the bed!

They put the cath in after they gave me a spinal so I was dead numb. Taking it out felt a little odd but not painful or uncomfortable and it took like 2 seconds
I too was worried about the cath, but it totally wasn't a big deal.

They put mine in before the spinal, but it was nothing to worry about, hardly felt it. I even had to carry my own 'bag' as we walked down to theatre! It was just as painless taking it out too. It really was nothing to worry about.

put in after the spinal....never felt a thing. Out the next day...a little tugging sensation. x

The catheter is fine. I also had mine put in after the anaesthetic - I didn't even know they'd put it in. When they took it out, for me it was like a tickling sensation - not painful at all. I was pleasantly surprised by that part of it, as the catheter was something I wasn't looking forward to.

Frankly, once you've been in bed for the best part of a day you'll be begging them to take it out. The worst bit for me was standing up for the first time - my stomach really stang, but I just wanted to be up and out of bed.

The put mine in about 5 minutes before they gave me the spinal. Why they didn't wait, I don't know. But it was the most horrifying experience of my life. Worst part hands down of my entire birth experience and I was in labor without pain meds for 17 hours. Not trying to scare you, but definitely insist they give you the spinal before the catheter. Maybe I got a nurse who was new and didn't know what she was doing but for me it was awful. Coming out though you do barely feel it. It's just a little weird.

Thanks for all of the replies, I will be requesting they do this bit after the anasthetic as not only do I not want any chance of feeling it, I don't want to feel someone fiddling about with my bits and pieces. I know this is a silly thing to say when you're about to have a baby and so many have told me "I won't care" and "dignity goes out the window" but I do care and it will bother me.

 I remember that feeling (of caring)
before my son was born, I wouldn't even leave female hygene products within view in the bathroom lest hubby see and be grossed out... as far as he was aware, I did not menstuate LOL... I didn't want any evidence of being un-ladylike...
When we went into the operating room, I still had tons of dignity, even kept my second gown on so no one saw my naked little bum (k it wasn't so little...)
Right after the surgery is whe the attrocities started! LOL ....They took all my covers off, and left my entire lower half naked and exposed while they transfered me over to my hospital bed... numb legs and flab were going everywhere! Hubby was kind enough not to look.... Then when we got to the recovery room, the nurse whipped up my blankets and started fitting me with the maternity pad... then coming in every 10 minutes, spreading my legs and checking if I wasn`t bleeding... Then when I was let out of recovery, I had to get into my bed under my own power, hubby holding me from the back, blood running down my legs... The bed I got into had a big pad which is supposed to protect the bed from blood, hubby had to adjust that for me and keep it still when I was coming back from the bathroom... that was just the first few hours...
Not saying you wont care, but dignity definitly goes out the window unless you can keep your loved ones out of the room at least until youre cleaned up..

I don't think it's really that you don't care or dignity goes out the window, you just let it go for a little while because there are more important things on your mind. lol

They put my catheter in all 4 times after I had my epidural/spinal. Since I couldn't feel it, it was no big deal. lol! Taking it out, on the other hand, was a different story. :-/ It has hurt me every single time...and I know I am not a wuss. ;) It just really stung and pinched, but it only lasted a couple of seconds. Going to the bathroom kinda stung for a the first couple of times afterwards, too, but it wasn't bad. I'm just prone to UTI's, so anything messing with my urethra makes me very uncomfortable. lol!
