Hi hun. GO to the cervical stitch thread where me and some other ladies "hang out" to discuss all things stitch related.

I had an emergency stitch in my second pregnancy and had to have an elective one in my last twin pregnancy at 12wks. I pushed for one because I daren't risk pregnancy without it, and with it being twins it was even more crucial. It wasn't a problem, and gave me peace of mind. I made it to 38wks carrying extremely big twins. I'd recommend an elective stitch every time, because it is more effective and takes any risk away x

i think what worries me most is i had the stitch at 24 weeks but ended up having a emergance c section due to infection ( the most likly caused by the stitch) so i am wondering weither its worth me having it if it did not help much last time?

It is more likely that the infection was caused because your cervix had begun to change, hence the need for a stitch. Once it has started funneling and shortening, infection is more likely to travel up into the uterus hun. I too began contracting once the emergency stitch had gone in, and had my daughter a week later at 24wks. However, the infection came from being dilated and infection getting in, not the stitch placement.

An elective stitch is placed before any changes to the cervix, so is much safer and more effective. My consultant reassured me about this, because I too was worried. The main risk with elective stitches is irritation of the cervix which can in 1% of women cause a miscarriage - this however is extremely rare and prevented with a pessary given after the op. Out of hundreds of women I have known who have had an elective stitch, this has never happened.

I am worried you might risk another preemie hun without the stitch, and I know what a nightmare that is :( Please don't let your concern about infection be the reason not to have it done - I would not have my healthy full-term boys now if it hadn't been for my miraculous stitch. Good luck, and get in touch if you need any further help xxx
