I went to check my cm before (after noticing watery fluid trickling from 'somewhere' - it stopped) and was shocked to find my cervix very low, soft and dialated to at least 1cm (i could fit my finger inside it easily with room tho I certainly didn't mean too!!) I wasn't expecting it at all and was stunned when I realised it was my cervix. I know it's my cervix after months of checking it while I was trying to get pregnant. Is it normal to be dialating this early? I'm going to the doctor tomorrow anyway but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. I asked this in the third tri forum thinking they would have experience with dialation etc but no one realy knew. I'm a bit confused because all my googling says that you can dialate a month before going into labour. I've got 13 1/2 weeks untill my due date!! Could this mean I could be at risk for pre-term labour? I just can't wait to go ask my doctor and I'm a bit confused. This is my first pregnancy

Is this your first pregnancy?? It's fairly normal for women who have delivered before to be a fingertip dilated through subsequent pregnancies. PLEASE don't go prodding at the cervix! If you are cramping, bleeding or losing fluid, phone the hospital. You don't want to introduce any infection into the birth canal that can harm the baby.

Hope you're ok :)

Really should read more carefully. As this is your first pregnancy, please go and get yourself checked out in hospital. The Drs would much rather see you now whilst there's still a chance of preventing any chance of labour than leaving it too late and finding they can't do anything.

The cervix should ideally be firm, in a posterior position and closed at this stage, particularly in a first pregnancy.

thanks for replying :) don't worry it wasn't deliberate :haha: It was so low I could feel it without even trying and it took me a second of 'what the hell is that' before I even knew what was happening. yes it's my first pregnancy. I'm going to the doc in the morning because I think I lost some clear fluid but I'm not sure since it was the smallest amount. I just wanted to see if i had water like cm to explain the fluid and was very suprised. I was wondering if anyone had dialated this early and it was normal etc for some people? It was so open that my finger was slightly inside it before I realised. I'm not too worried and I'm certainly not going to do any investigating lol just hope I didn't poke :baby:.

also I don't have any signs of pre-term labour so I'm hoping it's just normal for some people to dialate early. I did some research and if the clear liquid was amniotic fluid then there would have been more of it or at least a constant trickle and I'm pretty sure it's stopped. I realy hope I didn't introduce bacteria or anything. I'm so scared of infection!! Thank god I washed my hands thoroughly before I went to check my cm.

I was 1cm dilated my 1st pregnancy from 25 weeks on eventually to be induced at 37 weeks, can be ok but I'd still have it checked for sure.

That's great  at least it doesn't mean I'll go early. I was born at 29 weeks and 3 days (twin) and had heaps of health problems so I don't want that at all for my baby!! If you don't mind me asking did your doctor say anything about it? Did it lead you to being induced at 37 weeks or was that unrelated? I'm hoping if your doctor didn't make a big deal about it mine won't either. thanks for replying :)

24 weeks I was dialated to a 1 and they did sonogram to check further as my cervix was opening. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks and now I'm on bed rest. They don't like checking cervix by internal exam cuz it could make it worse or break waters if it was open. Its closed now but only cuz they put me on meds and bed rest. Get checked

Please no one worry about me I'm going to the doctor in the morning. Everyone on this forum is so friendly! I'm sure I'll get checked out fully as I was overdue for an antenatal appointment by a week anyway. Thank you so much for your advice. I won't take this lightly at all, I'm just trying not to scare myself too much. I'm a little nervous and just can't wait to hear what the doctor says tho I'm going to feel a little silly explaining how I know I'm dialating :haha: Maybe I'll just mention the fluid and ask to be checked. My pregnancy has been textbook perfect with my baby measuring ahead by a week at every ultrasound so I'm trying to be optimistic. I'm very nervous about infection so I'll ask about that too. I didn't think checking my cm was dangerous as they say you can have 'marital relations' but now I'm to scared to even have a bath. Only showers for me!! Thanks everyone :hugs:

good luck and they may not do an internal so just explain u checked ure cm and found ure cervix to be worryingly low c what they say let us know xxxx

yeah I think I'll just mention I noticed my cervix was very low while I checked after noticing the fluid. I'm a bit nervous as my old doctor just left the area and this will be my first appointment with the new one. Will they send me for an ultrasound?? Since my partner won't be back untill this afternoon with the car and we live in a remote area I won't be able to go for the appointment untill this afternoon and I just want to know already. I would normaly just walk (it's only 20 mins walk) but I'm scared of exerting myself now :( They don't do the ultrasounds there but will send me elsewhere which means I probably won't have that untill tomorrow. Waiting a day isn't dangerous is it? Surely not having the ultrasound untill tomorrow won't endanger :baby:? If it's an emergency I'm sure they'd send me to the hospital I guess no matter what time it was. I think I'm just worrying myself :dohh: Thanks so much for replying to this. I'll update you once I go to the doctor :)

went to the doctor!! got OH to leave work for a few hours to take me. They listened to the heartbeat - perfect  and measured my fundal height which was perfect too :happydance:. Because I've been feeling tons of movement they weren't worried at all:cloud9:. They did all the usual tests like blood pressure and checking for protein in the urine etc etc. They said since the fluid stopped I should be fine and if it happened again to try and catch the fluid on a pad and ring the hospital because they can test it to see if it's amniotic fluid. She said my ultrasound at 18 weeks showed my cervix was nearly 3 cm long (very good) and I had a perfect amount of fluid.

The only thing was they didn't do an internal or organise an ultrasound. I asked them if they could just to make sure I was still sealed up down there and she said it wasn't necessary unless I had more fluid coming out. Now I wish I had have told them about my cervix being dialated :dohh:. Mabe as long as there isn't any fluid it doesn't matter? I've been told to make sure I have at least 10 kicks a day, am not leaking any more fluid and I don't have and symptoms like intense cramping. I'm feeling reassured but still nervous about being slightly dialated. Thanks everyone for your advice :) I might finaly be able to get some  now!!

Glad you got to the docs and all went well. Rest plenty and make sure you do as they say :) xx

I'm in hospital at the minute because I waetting tightenings last night and they checked me and I'm about 2cm dilated, they said with a 2nd baby its normal to not be fully closed but 2cm is a bit more than they'd like so they've kept me in to keep an eye on me and baby. Thankfully the tightenings have stopped!

Fingers crossed your cervix closes back up hun, your in the best place, stay rested. Wishes to you and bubs xxx
