We named our baby girl Jaya and it is continuously pronounced wrong :( I keep debating on changing the spelling. Is that totally crazy at this point? She's almost 5 months old.

a) how would you pronounce it?
b) how would you pronounce Jaiya or Jaeya?
c) any middle name suggestions?

Please help!

I would pronounce all of them as "jay-ah" -- Is that correct?

Although, to be honest, i've only seen this name once (but never heard it pronounced) and often wondered if i was saying it correctly.

I'm guessing people may say "jiy-ya" as well??

I like the spelling Jaiya -- But i think with any of these spellings people may pronounce the name slightly different -- Not sure there is any way to completely avoid that.

Everyone misspronounces my name too -- Drives me nuts!

(I don't think it would be crazy to alter the spelling a bit, if you prefer! I think that's fine!)

Jaiya Corrine
Jaiya Skye
Jaiya Rayne
Jaiya Hope
Jaiya Isabelle
Jaiya Brooke
Jaiya Brielle

I personally wouldn't change it. I think it's fine just the way it is....like Ruby, I'm assuming it's pronounced "Jay a", which is JUST like it's spelled. If that's not the correct pronunciation, then maybe then and only then change it. Just my 2 cents. ;) Fwiw, I think it's pretty.
As for middle names:
Jaya Lynn
Jaya Brynn
Jaya Katelynn
Jaya Kathryn/Katherine (as you can see I prefer middle names ending with the "n" sound)

Good luck!

i would leave the spelling as is........i have a friend whose daughter's name is jaya (JAY-UH). i like jaiya as well, but i think that's just as likely to be pronounced like JIY-UH.

I would for sure not do it. It will follow her for the rest of her life. Every time she gets a job or applies for anything. There is a lot of paperwork if you've had a legal name change. And to add to it.... is it REALLY with 400+ dollars? My name has been pronounced wrong my whole life, much worse than I imagine hers is. I love my name. Never bothers me.

I would say "Jay-uh". How do you want people to pronounce it?

I would pronounce it as 'Jay-Uh'.. Is that right?

Jaya McKenna
Jaya Elyse
Jaya Rylee

id say Jay-ah too
i like katelynn, skye, elizabeth, alexis for middle name

Thank you for your feedback. It is pronounced Jay-uh but because of the 10000 Maya's out there, it has become Jy-ah :( Oh well, I guess she will just live with correcting people her whole life :( I really thought we had a winner with that name!

Thanks for the middle name suggestions! I thought if we were going to change her name we might as well add a middle name since we didn't give her one. Do people ever just assume a middle name even though it isn't legal? Or is that totally weird too?

I seriously considered changing the spelling back of my son's name, to the original way because it's a bit unusual, but changed my mind at the last minute.

You have a year post-registration of birth to change it. On the long birth certificate that's re-printed, the bottom section 17 will say name after registration - the new spelling basically. It wouldn't eradicate the original spelling, in fact that version would be the first name on the form at the top still.

My son's name people misspell allllllll the time, so i don't think formally changing it would have stopped that, people do all different ways naturally anyway.

In common usage, you can teach your child how you want to spell it, enrole them at the library and the school in any spelling you like, so by not changing it formally doesn't mean you have to stick with what you have.

After the year has past you can't change it unless through deed pole. So i'd give it careful thought as to whether it would be really worth it.

Oh and i love her name, especially pronounced with the "a" at the end. Really lovely.

Good luck.

Maybe think about the spelling....Jayah might be clearer for what you want it to sound like, (since it looks similar to Sarah or Hannah)

I wouldnt change it, you wanted that for your child so keep it! If people have to be told how to say it then it becomes more unusual i believe! My daughters middle name is Maia pronounced Mya but people pronounce it May-a an it winds me up so i was thinkin of changin but then i gave her that name for a reason! xx

Im not sure that even changing it will make people get it right. People say my name right (Holly) but they never spell it right! Ive seen all kinds of attempts and i thought my name was simple! In the end people will always get it wrong no matter what. I think its a lovely name and if thats the one you chose for her then dont back down too easily.
