Currently use SMA but my 12 day old seems to be suffering from constipation and trapped wind. My midwife has suggested we try infacol and additional water.

If neither of the above work she's suggested we swap to aptamil, has anyone had experience of changing formulas - how easy is it and what should we expect?

Constipation is a common problem with babies on SMA as it contains more irom than other brands. You could go with you midwives advise and give infacol and 1-2oz of cooled boiled water spread throughout the day. But also there is no harm in changing brands to see if a new milk would suit you lo better. Aptamil especially is known for producing very soft stools. xxx

I would try Aptamil it is known to be a more gentle brand. I have heard SMA is very constipating. It's not nice seeing your LO constipated is it? My wee man was constipated yesterday as i tried him on a staydown formula. I felt so bad for him

My LO used sma with no problems, it all depends what suits your LO but it could be that all formula does that to him. Its an old rumour that aptamil is the closest to breast milk, the gentlest which is not true, in the UK all formula has to be at the same standard so its hit and miss to what works for your LO.

Thanks for all the replies - its awful to see him go through this and I just want to do everything I can to help!

I think we stew going to try a couple of aptamil cartons to see how he likes it, he was more settled yesterday until about 6ish when he just looked like he was crying in pain poor mite

The cartons no matter what the make are less likely to constipate so he might get better on the cartons and go back the same when you swap back to the powder.

Elina has Cow & Gate but once during an afternoon out I went to Asda and they were out of C&W cartons so I got an SMA one and she was fine on it. It wasn't a problem for her to have a different brand
