Ok, so Eli had a new toddler bed on Monday - I wasn't going to put him in it yet but my fella put it together without asking and Eli saw it, resulting in him wanting to sleep in it there and then..!

So, I decided to give it a go and see how he liked it.....The first night he was up til 8:50pm running round his bedroom, playing, and shouting me from his gate..He eventually got himself into the bed and fell asleep and slept all night..

Yesterday he was quite cranky so I thought he must be tired...I put him to bed at 7.15, read him a story and gave him a cuddle...he didn't go to sleep until 8.30, after more playing, and crying aswell..He woke up at 1am, and i ended up having to sleep on his bedroom floor to get him to settle...he then slept through til 9am...

Tonight I've done his usual routine again but had him in pjs and bed for half 7, I've read to him, laid down in bed and "slept" with him, and have now come downstairs as he was just playing in bed and rolling around while i was trying to calm him...Not sure if I've moved him too early, I've given him the option to go back in the cot but he doesn't want to...

Any tips or help?! Please!!! :dohh::dohh::dohh:

No great advise hun- sorry. Hope others have some. My LO still sits and plays in her crib till she passes out- I'm sure she'd do the same if she had a toddler bed just play and get into things in her room-- easier when they are confined for sure! lol.

Hard to know what may work for your LO- if he understood he didn't have to go to sleep, but had to remain in his bed? Would he 'get' that? IDK. I'm no help. sorry.

I mean, long as he is happy in his room- maybe just let him have a go at it for a while. He may just get into his own routine well? Might just need that downtime right now as it's all new with the big boy bed... just some thoughts.

We tried at 2 to take the side off lo's cotbed and for 5 nights it was an utter disaster! Much like you but it got worse and worse each night and nap time.

We put the sides back on and left it.

We've just moved his room and its bigger and we got a proper single bed with a bed gaurd and put the cot in there too.

Straight away he wanted to sleep in the bed and we've said all along 'if you mess around, if you get out of bed etc, you will go back in your cot'.....he's stayed in bed the whole time! He doesn't fall asleep for an hour as he's chatting to his stuffed toys but he never gets out and is very easy to put to bed.

Maybe don't ask him if he wants the cot, tell him that's where he's going if he doesn't go to sleep!

Rhys has done really well being in his bed since 8th april :) gets out now and again but i'll keep putting him back in :).. but he does sleep 12 hours once he is asleep

My LO does the same still if he is having a ""fight sleep!" night. What helped me is I tried to keep as many toys put away as possible, but its impossible to keep everything put away.

He eventually got used to it in a few nights, it was a learning curve for him too. They have some independence and sure are going to test it out! I mean who wants to go to sleep when you can choose to get out of bed? Eventually it became "just a bed" and part of his normal routine to go to sleep even if he has the ability to play.

Then again, he comes into my bed at some point in the night anyway :haha:

But when I switched him into it from his cot at 17 months, he did fight it, just had to be consistent with letting him know that is where he sleeps. I switched back to the cot at first but just decided to take it down, and use the toddler bed and that was that.

Emily was 17 months old when my dad came to our house to 'help' build emilys toddler bed (he actually done it himself, hes one for doing things alone and everyone and anything just gets in his way :haha:) emily sat and watched my dad take down her cot and build her toddler bed. She was knackered and ready for her afternoon nap once it was built. We put her straight in there after she played and jumped on it for 10 minutes.Tucked her in and came downstairs... she got out the bed and played with her toys for 15 minutes and then it went quiet. When i checked on her, she was sprawled on the bed on top of the duvet  and she has been perfect since! She has occasionally woke in the night and played with her toys for a good half hour to an hour before going back to sleep xx
