Ok ladies. Please someone help me and I'm very sorry if I am doing people's head in! I keep going through phases of extreme panic, a few times decidingI was having a GA to deliver my baby (which is due 27/10) I then think no actually, I can do this with my Tens machine then birthing pool and g&a. What can I do to sort my head out. Ideally I would like to be able to go tens machine and birthing pool but since I've never had a baby, I haven't a clue! I've been getting bad pains recently which is why I'm freaking out. I think to myself, if I can't cope with those pains then how can I go through labour. Last thing, who has had an epidural and would recommend it. I don't want to get in such a state that I want one but then can't have one. Plllleeeaaseeeee someone help me lol xxx

I LOVED my epidural! I was given Cervidil to help my cervix get ready for the induction, and it actually started active labor for me. The contractions were horrible, coming every one to two minutes so I couldn't get a break to recover. The OB said I could have an epidural whenever I wanted it, so I finally got it at 2 AM. The pain was completely gone within 10 minutes, and it was such a relief! I ended up sleeping until 8 AM the next morning, and had plenty of energy to push. Didn't cause any complications or interventions, I could still move my lower body, and it let me have my relaxed and painfree birth that I was hoping for. Didn't affect Evie either - she scored a 9/10 and was completely healthy. :)

I would say go into it with an open mind, and if you end up using pain medicine don't feel bad! In the end it's all about having a happy and healthy mama and baby, right? :hugs:

Hey, thanks for replying. Yeah I agree! I'm not a fan of pain and not really in to the whole natural birth thing. I asked my mw about water birth at last appointment so she put it through my notes. Should I mention an epi aswll, just incase I want it? Xxx

Have you thought about doing hypnotherapy? I can't recommend it strongly enough, especially if you're someone who is easily panicked and feeling really nervous about things. It helps so much with anxiety and also with pain during labour. I did natal hypnotherapy (CD is 12 quid and you can get it on amazon, so it's not expensive, you just have to take the time to practice).

As for preparing for birth, I would go in with an open mind and not be opposed to using any pain relief you find you need at the time. BUT I'd also not go into it expecting it's going to be horrible, scary, painful and that you aren't going to cope. Because more than likely you'll be just fine!

I had a completely natural birth (actually, a home birth). I did the natal hypnotherapy for several weeks before and had the music CD that goes along with it playing in the background. And I just used a TENS machine. I had a birth pool, but only really got in for about 30 minutes and didn't like it very much so preferred to get out and walk around. I used the TENS up til I was fully dilated and starting to push (then had to take it off because I wanted to get in the pool), but then had nothing after that, just walked around and stayed upright and moving. I had gas and air available, but never felt like I needed it. It really is so very doable! And you really can do it! But the key to it being comfortable really is getting your anxiety under control because stress hormones prevent your body's natural painkillers from working and they make you tense up. The key to having an easier time of it really is staying relaxed, not stressed and not letting your body tense up when you have a contraction. If you're afraid or nervous or feeling like you can't do it, that will be much more difficult.

But really, you absolutely can do it!! Do try the hypnotherapy. I can't say enough how much it helped. I was so relaxed and chill and always felt in control. Contractions (which really don't last that long anyway) were uncomfortable and unpleasant, but they weren't unbearably painful. But I don't think it would have been as easy if I hadn't done the hypnotherapy. That was my first baby as well and I really had NO idea what it would be like. But I went into it just believing I could cope and not being afraid and I think that made a real difference.

At the same time, don't work yourself up thinking you don't want an epidural or that things have to go a certain way or you'll be upset. The best birth experience is one that's positive and as comfortable as possible for you and your baby. If it means getting an epidural, then that's okay too. But try to focus on the positive first and have faith because most women don't need pain relief and you probably won't either.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback!

I will have a look in to that, but am I not too late? I'm 36+1 so would I have enough time to learn it.

I've been feeling very positive for the past two days but starting to go down that negative route again but trying so hard not too. I've always said that I will accept all pain relief if I feel I really need it so thats what I'm thinking of. I think the worst part is that I don't know what to expect. The pains I had the other week were so bad that I convinced myself that I simply would not cope with labour but now, as I've forgotten about them really, I think I will manage.

I've got my Tens machine ready, as well as my birthday ball so that's making me feel better. Husband has been instructed to talk to me calmly, encourage me to calm down and breath and when I ask, run me a bath lol.

Xxx

There is no reason why you need to decide now.

Why not start with the tens, then use the birthing pool & gas and air.

Then if you can't cope ask for an epidural.

Yeah that's what I've got planned in my head. But what I'm worried about is, that might not happen. The pool might not be available and mw's try convince you to continue without an epi. Can you demand one? Lol xxx
