So 2 years ago i was almost wiped out in a car accident and it hurt my spine.
Ive been on morphine for the last 2 years while surgery is questioned.

Anyway when i discovered baby i stopped and the pain is so severe when i lay down so OBGYN today prescribed codeine. She says its safe if i only take it when desperate but im scared as the net says it can cause cleft palate.

Im so much in pain and dont know what to do anyone else take it or taking it?

And how are your babies?
xxxx

I found this website, it actually says the codeine is classified safe to use in pregnancy. Which surprises me, but it is what it is...

https://www.brooksidepress.org/Prod...Pregnancy/medication_use_during_pregnancy.htm

i also have a spinal problem and look codine when pregnant with my 4 year old son and now when ttc and will do when i get pregnant again . all my docs have said its ok as without i am in severe pain

good luck

i took paracodol for bad hip and pelvic pains in two pregnancies.

I was given codiene pills for my OHSS when I was getting severe cramps, I still take them when I get awful pains that I can't cope with. Hun you're not helping bub if you're in a whole lot of agony as your body is tense and stressed anyway...so the codiene will help that.

It's the ibprofen and anti inflammatories that are the danger in pregnancy.

Hi hun. Before I got my BFP I was on Tylenol 2 or 3s (which contain codeine) while I had a kidney infection. Elyse is thriving and doing very well.. no real health issues.

Thanks so much girls very reassuring xxxx

wow morphine is considered safe too on that list?? i wouldnt be happy going that far but at least i can take the edge off now when it gets too painful xx

Wikipedia gives you a pregnancy category for most antibiotics and drugs. "Codeine" just gets a ?, but

I checked out morphine and Tylenol 3 (it's under co-codamol on Wikipedia), it lists both as
"Pregnancy Category C" for the US, which it gives this explanation for:

"Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks."

Cleft Palate isn't caused by opiates, there have been studies that show a very small percentage of laboratory rats had offspring with cleft palate while on very high doses of benzodiazepines such as valium, klonopin, and xanax throughout their entire gestation, but opiates don't cause congenital malformations in the fetus, if taken throughout the pregnancy it causes physical addiction and withdrawal when baby is born, but in small amounts approved by your doctor, I would imagine baby would be just fine.

I have really bad sciatica and my doctor prescribed me solpadol which has codeine in. When i found out i was pregnant, i was in so much pain with my sciatica that i tried my hardest to grin and bear it. In the end i took 1 (I usually took 2) I read on the internet that it's usually safe to use in frist tri in moderation aslong as not too much, but not to use in 3rd tri as it can cause withdrawl in baby when he/she is born. xxx

hi i have ibs and i have to take codiene most of the time for it i have took it through 8 pregnancys and this one with no problems im sure you will be just fine.xxx

hi sweetie i have hip dysplasia and a severe back problem and have been taking codine for 4 years this is my second pregnancy taking it and i take the highest dose i couldnt cope without it but it is safe to take so try not to worry i take it everyday the babys get addicted to it but but cus i breast fed the baby is naturally weaned of as you cut back the milk later on so breast feeding would be a good thing for you my daughter had no problems at all xxx

Oh my God you have NO idea how wonderful you have made me feel i just started bawling cos ive been so scared after taking some last night and this morning! I try so hard to cope and coming off the morphone was a lot easier than I thought as I want whats best for my baby but I am so scared of how much this hurts now and Im not carrying any extra weight yet!!!

Reading from ladies that have taken it (and like you carrieanne they have put me on the highest dose) and have had fine babies makes me feel like i can cope.

Im restricting it to twice a day morning and night and when i get my physio referral ill hopefully be able to cut back!

Thanks again xxxxxx

I looked it up and it says Codeine is Category C which is untested during pregnancy.

https://pain.emedtv.com/tylenol-with-codeine/tylenol-with-codeine-and-pregnancy.html

This site says it's unsafe during pregnancy. I'm not a doctor but I would get a second opinion just to be on the safe side..

It says it may cause neonatal withdrawals if taken in the 3rd trimester which is never good.

Good luck. You may want to find a pain management specialist to help you with safe pain management alternatives during pregnancy.

I spoke a doc today about catagory C. They know codiene has no effect on the fetus development and can be used at any stage in pregnancy however you muct withdraw in your last trimester and are offered more physio during that time to help you but as im only taking it twice a day instead of 4 times as i can cope til bed time she says my baby should have no dependancy xx Thanks though xx

I took strong codeine from about 12 weeks in my last pregnancy due to SPD and my daughter was fine. I've stopped taking it since I found out I was pregnant this time, but am considering starting it again soon for the pain, and my doctor said this was ok.

Hello ladies. I'm currently suffering from sciatica, pinched nerve along my spine AND severe migraines as well. I'm 5 weeks preg & sick with pain. I was on acetaminophen with codeine on and off for a "few years" before & then for 2 weeks into my pregnancy--before I received my bfp. I was taking 4/day. Each tablet contains: acetaminophen 300 mg, caffeine 15 mg, and codeine phosphate 8 mg. When I did get my positive though, my protective motherly instincts immediately kicked in and I got paranoid so I stopped taking the meds. I was a smoker too and have been smoke free since that glorious day as well (cold turkey after being a dirty smoker for 23yrs!!) and will stay smoke free for the remainder of my pregnancy (& hopefully afterwards as well!). This is how serious I am about being a mommy again & protecting my l'il bean. But my goodness...the pain is utterly unbearable. I do not sleep because I can't get comfy in my own bed due to the pain & discomfort. When I do eventually fall asleep I'm woken with nauseating debilitating migraines from hell. Have you ever experienced vertigo/aura while lying down? It's sickening. So I've been researching the crap out of this topic as well in hopes that I will find something to reassure myself that a little relief will be just fine as my 1st prenatal isn't until next week! I have also been hearing a lot about the fact that there has never been a study involving human pregnancy and codeine consumption as well but during my search I came across this page. I found the study to be very informative and thorough. Please check it out! I hope that this will be of some help to all of you who suffer from chronic pain & have concerns about whether or not codeine is in fact safe to take during pregnancy or not. I hope you are able to view the link ok!! :flower: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3214255/
