I have a windy baby and after trying infocol and dentinox (plus different formula) the dr recommended Colief.

On reading the instructions I need to add 4 or 2drops depending on if made on advance and then wait 30 mins!! my baby is hungry when hes hungry and tells me all about it! i can't wait half an hour!? Can anyone offer me any advice?

Once, if you follow everything to the letter, I have freshly boiled the kettle, let it cool for 30 mins, made the bottle and added the formula, cooled it, added Colief, waited a further 30 mins my poor son would be starving and screaming the house down lol.

PS. He is on Aptimil if it helps and the powder as this suits him best - the pre-made cartons made him worse!

I didn't wait 30mins, just gave it to Isobel straight away (using aptamil too). I think that just allows the colief to actively work. Just so you are aware it changes the milk and can make their poo's acidic and give nappy rash.

EDIT: Are you using Easy Digest or Apatmil 1?

I never used colief myself but my SIL did. Do you make bottles up front? She used to have about 4 feeds made up in the fridge (aptamil) and she rotated them. When she took the feed she used to add colief to next feed if that makes sence. So then next feed she took the bottle with colief and add some for the next. You can do it that way as it lets colief do what its suppose to.
But if you make every feed fresh Im really clueless lol

Hi hun, I used colief and never waited 30 mins, I was breastfeeding but giving Oliver a small amount of formula (Aptimil) or EBM in a bottle with colief before BF and it still worked great.

It is supposed to breakdown the lactose which is why you should wait 30 mins but for some reason the BF instructions say express a small amount onto a spoon and add the drops and feed straight away, I cant understand why it says to wait 30 mins when using a bottle or feed straight away if BF

Because formula milk is altered cows milk more lactose i suppose... compared with breast milk. I was giving Isobel colief while breastfeeding and doing exactly same as you techi_girly

Hiya,

I had exactly ther same question. They totally contradict themselves too, because how can you make a bottle then store it for 4hrs if you're meant to prepare bottles as and when you want them? Its crazy!

My routine is now the same as K&H suggested. I prepare bottles of water in the morning, store them in the fridge and make 1 milk bottle with 2 drops. 4 hours later (or 2-3 in my case!) Lilah has that bottle. Whilst its warming I prepare another milk and add the drops and store that in the fridge too untill she wants it.

I have to be honest though, Im not finding any massive improvement using it....

Good luck hun xx

I was using that on the doctors advice too, totally couldnt have left them for that time. I just added them and give straight away. But then it never helped her so maybe thats why lol I don't know. It just seems like a silly thing to have to do, but what others have suggested with storing them and adding it too the next one when your doing one feed so it's been in a few hours sounds like a good idea. I'm not using it anymore as it didnt have any affected, but maybe that is because i didnt leave it i don't know. I just using infant gaviscon now, its easier lol

Im using both at the minute. Ive not had any joy with the colief yet, but I think it'd be a gradual thing, and Ive only started the preparing bottles thing Saturday.

I think you'd have to leave the bottles for some length of time so the lactase can work. GIve it another try hun and good luck x

it worked within 24-48hours with us, but that was primarily breastmilk

i used colief and at times we waited 30 mins and at times we didn't if she was mad hungry i'm afraid it was just time to feed and that was it. However what i would say is that aptamil is known for making windy babies worse as this is what happened with my daughter. The greatest thing that we did was to put her on cow and gate comfort First, as it is easier on the tummy and is to settle a baby. I've just had my second child a boy and i never even contemplated anything other than c&g comfort we never needed anything else eg. colief with him as he was setteld straight away on it.

We started putting the drops into the breastmilk and giving it through a bottle, only problem was, the bottle makes her wind worse amd she wont take anything off a spoon! So, we put the drops straight into her mouth, she gets two of them before a feed and loves them!

My doctor said it was fine to do that, and it works a treat (also keeps her quiet an extra 5 minutes if she is starving!!)

Dear Charlie5,

I work for Colief and just saw your post. Please find below a link to video's showing how to use Colief with formula by childcare expert Dawn Kelly.

There are also further videos where Dawn Kelly explains more about colic and how to cope with it.

We hope these help.

Kind wishes,

Rebecca

Found this on the colief site:

"Can you make up more than one bottle at a time?
Yes, though the latest advice from UK Dept. of Health is that bottles are made up as and when required. The bottles should be made up as normal and allowed to cool to body temperature (not hot – not cold). Add two drops of Colief® per feed and place the feeds in a refrigerator for a minimum of four hours. Take the feeds from the fridge as required and reheat before giving the feed to the baby.

If made up in advance, we recommend 12 hrs as a maximum limit for keeping milk treated with Colief®, even when stored in a refrigerator. The Colief® will have completed its task of breaking down most of the lactose in the feed in the first 4 hrs, and little further activity will subsequently take place. It is not good practice to keep made-up formula for too long, even in a refrigerator."
