Are we allowed to eat coleslaw?

I've never heard before that we weren't suppose to eat it and I ate it when I was pregnant with my son but I received my cow and gate baby club pack today and in the pregnancy diary it says not to eat potato salad or coleslaw as it can contain high levels of listeria!

I didn't know this and had some yesterday! My midwife has never mentioned it, has anyone else heard of this?

Thanks

The only way I could think of that it would be a strong listeria hazard is if it's made with homemade mayo that uses unpasturized eggs. My doctor gave me a list of no-no foods and that's not on there.

i have yes. pregnant women should stay away from any prepacked salads and anything that may contain mayonaise as the eggs they use might not be pasturised. its always best to check the label before eating it x

I never thought of it being the mayo. So if it's pasteurised it's ok?

My midwife told me that shop bought things like coleslaw, Mayo and dips etc are fine because the eggs used in them have been through all the processing and stuff so it's only a very very slight (if any) risk of listeria etc. Homemade is done with raw eggs which haven't been processed so there is still a high risk.

Basically... Shop bought... Good! Homemade... Bad! :)

XxX

if its pasturised its fine, some shop bought coleslaws still use unpasturised eggs but it always says on the label x

Personally we eat farm fresh eggs and have never had a problem they are from healthy chickens in a great environment. I would rather fresh ones that we get our selves then ones from a huge mass producing chicken farm, god knows what type of conditions and products they pump those chickens full of. LOL ok my rant is over :P
You should be fine to eat coslaw :) just read the label :)

so long as its either shop bought coleslaw or home made coleslaw but made with shop bought mayo then it should be fine x
