Hi,

Sorry to post this to all you ladies but I'm having trouble finding any info about it on the net.

I got Married a year ago. At the wedding ceremony my sir name was changed to my husbands and this remains so on the marriage certificate. I have never changed my name from my maiden name with my bank, drivers licence, passport. But have done at my Dr's and car insurance (but that it). So legally where do i stand?

Because i have changed my name at my Drs practise my MAT B1 has a conflicting sir name to my bank details - i this an issue...? Should i tell work to use my maiden name when registering the MAT B1 form (if that how it works)

Also I'm about to apply for a mortgage with my husband; all my important documents are registered with my maiden name - so that shouldn't be an issue should it?

I had to get my passport changed to my married name so I could use it as ID when I got my mortgage, but I had already changed my name with the bank. Maybe ask the bank what they recommend? :flower:

When you get married the name thing is a little bit funny because you can use both names indefinitely. My mum re-married 8 years ago and has some things in her new married name and some in the old.

Don't worry though - put anything new in your married name and even if it conflicts with your maiden name you only need to show the marriage certificate. I've paid cheques into the bank that had my maiden name on by showing them my marriage certificate.

It's so easy to get your name changed with banks etc though and I think it'd be worth doing sooner rather than later to avoid these issues. Just go into your bank with your marriage certificate. The only thing still in my maiden name is my passport but I'm planning to sort that before we next go abroad.

Im not sure if it would be a problem but heres a few easy things to do:

all u need to do is take ur marage cert in and say.... ive only just noticed it hasnt been changed and they usually change it straight away in the bank..

Your insurance will be invalid if ur driving licence is in a diffrent name (usually the give u grace like 2 months) i only know this as my cousin is married split up went and done her insurance in her maiden name... her car licence in married name some one hit her.. and her insurance was invalid... so get that done asap!! (cheap way of changing it say youve "lost" your licence and send in a copy of your marriage cert aswell to change ur name)

passport is not an essential just if u book a holiday make sure its booked in one or the other,, if in married name take ur marriage cert with u... but if your going to a place that needs a visa then book i would deffo change

Again if u have a long time on ur passort just change the name if its 1-2 years "loose" it and update details (cheaper) and u get the extra 1-2 years on it too :-D

Hope this helps

Just take your passport and marriage cert into work, It'll be fine. Mine is the same.

Really? Oh dear... my driver's licence is in my maiden name but insurance in married name. Best get onto this!!!

I would get your driving licence changed to married name as insurance won't be valid if they are in different names.

Also it is simple to change bank details by just taking your marriage certificate into your branch and filling in a few forms.... cards and cheques will be re issued with new name.

Passport can still be used for holidays provided you book the holiday in the name on the passport and most places will accept the passport in maiden name along with marriage certificate as ID. They may ask for another form of photo ID so getting the driving license changed will back up the passport and marriage certificate :)

Not sure about the mortgage part as we bought our house together before we got married so our deeds are in my maiden name but as we re-mortgaged through our joint account that is in my married name the mortgage is in my married name now.

If all your legal documents are in your maiden name and your bank account is in your maiden name you should be ok although you will probably need to make the application in your maiden name and also have the title deeds at the land registry in your maiden name too. Not 100% sure but I think that's how it works. Although you could just change everything over now. It doesn't take long to change your name with the bank, you only need your marriage certificate and it will only take a few days, might be longer for DL/Passport as you may need to produce these for your mortgage application.

It's free to change your name on your driving licence. I just did it as I got married in June

Bank was easy but I found my credit card etc a nightmare as they all wanted the original or a certified copy of the marriage certificate so it took ages to send off the certificate, get it back to send it to another company.

Passport is the most expensive change as you have to pay for a whole new passport

The only things I'd worry about would be driving licence as they can fine you, and insurances for car etc, as they use any excuse not to pay out, lol! X

As everyone said - the bank stuff is reasonably easy to sort out. I'd change the driving licence too - it is straightforward and they sent mine back really quickly. I'm not changing the passport until it runs out (2013) so I always use my maiden name when booking flights.

It's handy to have your driving licence as ID in maiden name in case you need it when using credit cards or anything. It's a pain changing everything at first but will be much simpler down the line when it is all consistent.

I still have my passport in maiden name as I had 5 years left on it and they said as long as travel booked in that name then ots ok. I changed everything else though. I dont drive so provisional in maiden name but if I were you at least get bank and driving license changed. Xx
