Ladies I just wanted to check I'm doing this right, I boil water in the kettle let it stand for 20-30 mins, pour into sterilised bottle and then leave to cool. I have the small pots which I fill with enough formula and when needed I add to the water and give to my LO at that temperature? Is that ok?

I asked my health visitor who said that was ine and ok to make 4 bottles up like that at a time. I'm getting confused with what is right and wrong. A friend told me she makes up enough bottles for the day adding the formula to cooled boiled water and leaves at room temperature. Very confusing PLEASE HELP!!!

Heya.

If your friend is mixing the water with the powder and leaving at room temperature all day then please tell her to stop! It is very dangerous and made up formula should be kept at room temperature for a maximum of 1-2 hours. If she were to mix her formula and store it in the fridge, then the bottles would be safe to use for upto 24 hours.

Alot of mums use the method that you use, and after you add the powder to the water and start to feed baby then any unused milk should be thrown away after 1 hour. xx

If you have to pre-make milk the leaflet the midwife at the hospital gave me said to make with 70'c boiled water, add milk powder. Then store in the back of the fridge. Reason for this is because milk powder is not sterile.

Thanks ladies I think because LO drinks bottle at room temp I will continue using the method I have been using. I was just worried as I thought it would make more sense if bottle was made with boiling water. If it is made with boiling water how do you heat, my LO would give me no time to heat a bottle when he needs fed he needs fed now lol.

Pixie thanks will tell me friend x

The way you are making bottles is Ok but not ideal and is only recommended by the world health organisation if you have no access to boiling water (ie if you were going out for the day). A better way of doing it to give LO a fresh bottle but to be able to do it instantly (and safely) would be to have a bottle of cooled boiled water in the fridge (refresh every 12-24 hours maximum). When LO is wanting a feed boil the kettle, if LO was to have a 4oz bottle then put 2oz of boiling water in a bottle with the 4 scoops of powder, mix well to kill all the bacteria in the formula then add 2oz of fridge cold water and this should be at drinking temperature.

The reason the guidelines suggest leaving water to cool is to prevent scolding when you pour it, obviously if you are careful then you can do it from boiling.

I've read so many different things and it made me sooo confused....and to be honest everyone has their own way of making up formula, Ive asked family/friends and they all have their own method.

I do the following .....
I boil kettle, leave for 15-20 mins then fill 3-4 bottles with the water and add powder, give a good shake and store in back of fridge. When bubs needs a feed I take it out, warm in bottle warmer and she has been fine feeding like that since 3 weeks old.

I did try the mixing cool boiled water with hot water but she seemed to get fussy with all the feeds I made like that (could be coinsidence I suppose) so I went back to my above method.

I didn't bother telling HV as their guidlines are to make each bottle fresh, which I have done occasionally but its hard when shes crying for a feed.

If were out and about then I take cartons as its easier and I'm not sure how long my refrigerated bottles would last out of the fridge so prefer to have the cartons on hand just incase.

x
