So I have no experience with this obviously and my OH says he doesn't know, (total cop out of you ask me! lol) but is it normal for a boy of 5 to constantly fiddle with his penis? His trousers are usually too tight around his belly to allow easy access but if he is in shorts or in his pj's he is constantly fiddling (not masturbating). He has had a thrush infection in the past and I am worried he might have one again or give himself one with this constant fiddling. His hands aren't always the cleanest and I honestly cannot wash his hands every time he has a fiddle either. When asked he sometimes says it hurts and other times he says it doesn't. He doesn't like us applying cream so it could not be true, he does make up stories. On the other hand I don't want to drag him to the doctor's for such a thing either. Advice please?

It's normal and healthy. It's actually important as it's how they slowly unfuse their foreskin. Just maybe chat about when it's appropriate.

Hey, our slightly younger boy did this and was saying it hurt after a while so we took him to the doctor as it looked sore. The doctor said this is so so so normal, hear of it all the time, they gave us a cream for it, but said yes just encourage boys not to, but that of course they will at times it's natural discovery and curiosity.

We just tell our four year old that it's absolutely 100% fine to touch himself and have a fiddle, but that's it's not something we do when we're in public, but he's welcome to go to his room and do it!

It's totally normal, it's just our job to teach them when it's appropriate to do it.

My 3 year old daughter is constantly poking about at herself! I just tell her to do it in her bedroom where it is private and not to do it in front of other people.

Normal. I have to remind both of my boys quite often that they don't need to be messing with it in front of other people. I usually ask if they need to go to the bathroom, and if not, then they need to stop messing with it.

Thanks all. I did think it was normal and I don't mind it as such though it is constant at times. I am more worried about him getting thrush again. Did your boys ever get it and do you think it could be linked to the fiddling?

Colton got yeast infections in that area multiple times as a baby/toddler before he was ever potty trained, but hasn't had one in a few years.

Neither of my boys have ever had a yeast infection.
