Hello ladies,

I am damn worried at the moment because I was craving bitter gourd and ate it in dinner . Little did I know it is not safe for pregnancy. I was just surfing it's nutritional value and found this:

Cautions About Bitter Melon

Bitter melon should be used with caution by young women of childbearing age since it may induce menstruation and inadvertently cause abortion if the woman is pregnant.

I am literally scared to death at the moment and can really need to hear if you have any thoughts on this. I am so not eating bitter gourd again in my life.

How long ago was this? If it's within the last few hours, I'd probably make myself sick (what's one more time when you're pregnant :haha:). But I'd assume you'd be fine having eaten it only once, or there'd be much clearer warnings. Can you phone your doctor and ask for more advice?

I don't know what bitter melon is but there are loads of herbs that can do this. However i think there is only really a risk if you have loads. I avoided certain herbs in first tri but just had them in moderation afterwards. I'm sure it will be fine, but if you are concerned call your midwife xx

My mom used to eat bitter melon all the time when she was pregnant. She was telling me it was one of her major cravings. I guess they didn't know it could cause problems back then. She had 7 healthy pregnancies; no miscarriages or other problems.

I'm sure she didn't eat an entire bitter melon in one sitting though; maybe a few slices with other food. With most of these things, it's all about quantity. For example, too much ginger supposedly causes contractions, which can cause miscarriage or early labor. But the tiny amount that I, and many other people, took every few days to combat morning sickness, had no effect whatsoever.

I agree, if it was recent, you could try bringing it back up, especially if you ate a lot. If you just had a reasonable amount, it's really probably fine. Like I said, my mom ate a little bit on most days while pregnant with my older siblings, no problems.

I ate it 2~3 hurs before i posted. But, i tried to bring it up and i Couldn't so, i ate meds for curing constipation. I am not having any problems for moment but, really going to check everything I eat now.

I had NO idea it wasn't a good idea to eat bitter melon. :S

A couple days ago I went to an Okinawan restaurant and had some... I assume I'm alright since nothing happened. I'm glad I saw this, though. :S I hope everything is ok with you!

Yeah, I was surprised to see this too. Glad to hear that. It definitely gives me little relief. I am craving bitter melon from many days and finally got to eat it yesterday. But, do take care to stay away from it as much as possible. Almost every website I searched had this warning.

You could try some activated charcoal but its most likely too late for that. If you feel any pain or contractions you should probably go to the hospital. I remember seeing bitter melon on one of my lists of no nos but I don't even think its legal to sell in the US since the FDA doesn't consider it safe. Reading about it has totally freaked me out.

TMonster, thanks for suggestion. I feel fine other than little pressure I think i got away with it this time. Ohh, is it? In most of the Asian countries it is legal. When I asked my MIL she didn't think it is harmful and ate it during her pregnancy. But, again most of women folks might not even know it is toxic. Anyways, I am not gonna even see it again :nope:

I read that people in asian countries sometime eat it when they are nearing their due date to help them go into labor but you probably need to eat a lot of it for that.
It isnt that its toxic but that it causes uterine contractions which can trigger labor in pregnant women. Also children should avoid it. I read something about children going into comas after drinking bitter melon tea but that is probably pretty concentrated.

I havnt heard of it, but I'm sure your fine. Theres alot that we arnt supposed to eat during pregnancy that lots of people across the world eat all the time. But, If you do start spotting I would go to ER right away.

Thanks. Yeah, the list is long but and I really don't give much attention to it. But, this one certainly got my attention when it read " spontaneous abortion" if u consume with seeds. Probably you are right. As of now nothing and feeling totally fine. I am sure it has gone from my system by now.
