Do I have to switch to step 2 (6 months +) now that my lo is 6 months? Is it ok to continue giving her step 1 (0-6 months)? She's been exclusively breastfed since birth and we've only just begun replacing one feed a day with formula over the last couple of weeks. I understand that step 2 contains more calcium, iron, and protein but can these needs be met through solids? I think step 1 is easier to digest so getting her to take formula will be a smoother transition (and we have a large brand new can of it that will otherwise go to waste). But I'm worried about comprimising meeting lo's nutritional needs..

Anyone else still feeding their 6 month+ baby step 1 formula?

im still using stage 1 milk for harry but will probably use stage 2 when the box has finished! i would use stage 1 to make sure it agrees with your lo then if it does try stage 2! although i have been told its exactly the same but they're allowed to advertise it after 6 months!

How old is your little one? Do you try to supplement with solids to meet nutritional requirements or do you just feed more of the step 1 formula?

Yeah I think I read something about advertisement after 6 months in another thread on the forum..not sure I understand why that's the case though.

I have never heard of stage 1 or stage 2 formulas? Here in the US we have a formula for babies over the age of one year but aside from that we use the same formula we start our LO's on from the start.

Harrys 7 months. hes on 3 meals a day and has 3x7oz of formula too! x

I emailed sma for an honest answer to this as the NHS website recommends you stay with stage one. They replied that stage 2 has a higher amount of iron in it and has something I can't remember in it which takes longer to digest, keeping them fuller for longer. However it has less nutrients in it and is harder to digest.

They also confirmed that its illegal to advertise stage 1 milk and they're not allowed to offer promotions or deals on it so although they agreed that it wasn't necessary to change, I would benefit financially from changing.

Needless to say my baby remains on stage one :)
