Just wondered do you give your babies cooled boiled water in between milk feeds and if so how much and how often and at what age did you start. My lo is nearly 10 weeks and not sure wot to do. HV never told me to do it. But suddenly wondered if my lo should have it. He has loads of wet nappies so is not dehydrated at all.

We were told to offer it when she was about a month old. But we had really bad heatwaves at the time and it was to reduce the risk of dehydration.

I only offered it once a day, between her lunch and afternoon feeds (so between roughly 12pm - 4pm) and only ever let her have a couple of sips/mouthfulls. I'd put 2oz's of water in the bottle but she'd never finish it - on really hot days I'd maybe offer it twice during the day but she'd only take an oz at the most (in total for the day, not in one go).

i give it to jack my hv advised me to do it as he was wanting fed every hour! so i am only to give him milk every 3hr and if he gets hungry between feed i try him with water he only takes about 1oz probs about twice a day. x

My HV recommended it for Evie when she was constipated and said tis good to give because it flushes all the nastys out their systems. She said to give 90mls a day but dont do it all in one go. So i did 30mls before each feed when evie was just starting to get hungry because then she drunk the whole 30mls each time instead of spitting it out or me having to offer it to her when shes half asleep and really not interested in it. x

I asked if I could give it to my LO when she was about 3wks old as she was constipated and one day she had been screaming for milk despite being fed less than hour prior, I guessed she was thirsty as it was warm and HV agreed. As for how much, I just give her what she wants.

Jeez its amazing how different health visitors have such different opinions! My HV told me that under no circumstances, unless constipated, should a baby be given water before the 6 month mark! She was really quite firm about it! So I dont give Brandon any water at all! Sorry, thats not really useful advice but I just find it amazing how different HV's have different opinions! x x x

Heh, it is funny how all the HVs have a different opinion - mine never mentioned water, and I never asked, till this week (he's 17 weeks tomorrow). It was a different one at the clinic when I went to get him weighed + 16 weeks jabs. She asked if I was still combination feeding, which I am not as of this week, so then she suggested water between feeds. Not to worry if he didn't want it but just to be aware that he might be thirsty now he's no longer bf at all.
