Copper coil vs mirena

After a few months of uncertainty, I've now decided that I'm going to get either the coil or mirena. Has anyone had either? What are your experiences? My GP said that there is a small risk of uterine infection which may effect future fertility, but he said the risk is very small. He also said if I don't like either, I can have them removed with no ill effects.

I have had 2 mire as now, first one before I had my LO and the second 8 weeks after her birth.

Never had any problems with them, my periods stopped with both of them. After I had my first one removed my period returned exactly a month later and I was pregnant 3 months after TTC.

I did have a scare last week where I thought I may have been pregnant as my boobs felt a bit tender and sore but a test was negative so put it down to it being 'time of month' when I would have had my period and also think my boobs have finally perked back up after nearly 2 years

I have the mirena and have been absolutely fine, I've had it nearly a year so far. I understand its not suitable for everyone. But I've have no trouble since day one. The only negative I have to say about it is getting it put in. This for me was vevry painful and I did feel quite faint afterwards, I'm not sure if its because I apparantly have a tilted uterus but that was the worst part for me.

Should add first one was painful fitting as I'd never had any children but second one was fine, actually didn't feel a thing

Yeah, I mentioned we're still BFing and he said the mirena was a low progesterone dose so it shouldn't effect that. I think I may go for that. We'll see what the other GP says. I have an appointment next week.

Ive not had any but have thr implant just now and looking to get a copper coil. No hormones with that and I think that's what I need. I've had a period basically for 6 months constantly. It's awful. I'm just putting up with it until I get the energy to go do something about it but next time I don't want any hormones so will get the copper x

I had the cooper coil after having Rhys and the month after having it taken out we were having Liam lol

I like it as there are no hormones but it did hurt for a few weeks after, I am having it put in again next week

I have a Mirena & absolutely love it - would never use another birth control method now to be honest and dread the day I have to get my period again lol. I had mine put in July 2009 and my periods got lighter and shorter each month, and in February 2010 they never came back. It's been HEAVENLY - I used to get bad cramps and feel really ill & just lay in bed at least 1 day of it each month. No cramps, no monthly mood swings, no period.

Insertion was painless for me, and Elyse was born by c-section. I was given misoprostol to insert prior to my appointment with my gynaecologist. Had a bit of cramping after but no bleeding, just some CM.

I've had some paranoia a couple of times about getting pregnant on it but generally I'm completely confident with it.

I have a copper coil, it's been in a couple of years now without any bother, I also had one in between having jack and Leah with no problems then either. I like the fact that it is non hormonal, jeez I have enough probs with hormones without adding to them lol

I've got one but i can't actually remember which one it is lol. I know its the one that i can keep in for up to 10 years if that helps!

I had my put in 3 months after having DD. It wasn't the most pleasant experience but then i had had a lot of stitches when i had DD. The said that if i couldn't cope with it that i could come back a few weeks later when things might not be so sore but i decided it'd be better off having it done there and then. I do somewhat dread having it taken out but that's 7 years down the line so i'll worry about that then lol.
When i had mine put in i was still b/f and continued to do so for another 15 months and it didn't affect anything. I was told that my periods could be affected in a very negative way but if they were then i could have it taken out and the other type would probably work better. As it happens i haven't had any problems. My periods are longer than they were and slightly closer together but they are very light for 5 out of the 7 days and i tend not to get much in the way of cramps - but then i never did suffer with cramps before. The worse part is that i very randomly get the odd period that is much later and it freaks me out as we are not wanting any more children at all.

I've had a mirena for 10 months now, I've had no side effects with breastfeeding either. It did take a while for the spotting to stop, but I don't get periods anymore which is fine by me! It wasn't painful at all getting it inserted but I did have some cramps for an hour or so after. It's great! :)

I think I may go for mirena. This no period business sounds good :)

Obviously not everybody reacts the same way to any medication, but I have some Mirena horror stories.

I got pregnant on the Mirena, and that resulted in mc#1. I didn't have any medical management because Planned Parenthood couldn't help me. I miscarried alone in my bathroom, and retained some "products of conception." I bled for 10 months straight, to the point that I wanted the damn thing out so I wasn't bleeding on my honeymoon. I was told it would be wasting money, and I should leave it in longer to see if the bleeding stopped. They gave me birth control pills to take on top of the Mirena, just so I didn't bleed through my wedding dress!!!
I pestered them until they finally listened to me and took it out after 10 months of pure hell! Like a pp said, it was just constant bleeding (not spotting, full out bleeding) the whole time.

TMI Warning!!

Do you know what happens to the downstairs area when it's exposed to constant moisture for nearly a year? It gets all pruny and my skin started peeling off from being rubbed raw and wet for so long. And my new husband and I barely DTD at all. It was easily the most miserable 10 months ever!! And that's saying nothing of the 50+ lbs I put on during that time.

Yikes! I was told if I hated it, it can come out immediately.

I have gained 20lbs since having mine in as well... But being totally honest & fair here, I can't blame my birth control for it, sure my eating habits have not significantly changed, but I eat take-out often, etc.

I had a copper coil fitted after having DS. Never had any issues with it (no weight gain, no irregular bleeding, just when I expected to bleed each month) and only had it taken out late last year so we could try for number 2. I'm gonna get another one fitted soon. Biggest bonus for me is the no hormones, they don't agree with me.

I have my appointment on Friday so we'll see what's the best option :)

I am having mine fitted this morning, wish me luck

The copper coil, it didnt hurt being put in but its hurting now and I am bleeding

MY cervix was in a good place she said, very low but I have to take it easy for the next 48 hours incase it falls out
