Cot Mattress - advice please!

I already have a cot bed from my DD but I am debating whether to buy a brand new mattress. My DD hardly had a night's sleep in her cot ever since she was born. She mostly spent her nights in a travel cot next to us and sometimes co-slept with us. She had never got sick in her cot or anything.

I use her cot bed to store clothes, etc in it. That was it. The mattress is left covered with bedding and plastic mattress protector. I haven't taken them off the mattress for a while. I am about to wash the new bedding for the next baby.

Do you think I can still use the mattress - as it still is clean. It is nearly 6 years old - not new or old, just hardly used?

I have read about old mattress bring one of the causes of SIDs, not sure if this applys to a mattress hardly used or not ?? I bought my DD a new one just so I knew it was clean and safe, I know they cost a lot but I think the the fact that it is safe is more important

Thanks Jade. I spoke to my DH after I posted and he said we should go for a new one. So I have just ordered a new mattress! Feel better now! I agree that safety is important than price!
