hope this isnt going to sound too confusing but when the midwife/doctors asks how much milk baby is drinking (or when it says 500-600mls a day) is it the water thats put into the bottle without the formula (for example 3 scoops for 90ml water..does that equal 90mls of milk or 100-110mls i think it comes to when its got the formula added). so sorry if this is a stupid question!

I've always counted it by how much water went into the bottle

Interested to see what people say

I count by how much water I use, not once it is mixed. So for 4 oz of water, I say 4 oz bottle, not 4oz + whatever it comes to once powder is added.

If it's just for the purposes of telling a health professional roughly how much, I always said it by how much water went in, but obviously a feed made with 3 oz of water and 3 scoops of powder is a greater volume than 3 oz of milk poured from a ready made carton, so I just used to say "three ounces of powdered stuff" or "three ounces of ready-made milk" etc. The difference in volume isn't that huge, so it shouldn't matter for general questions. If it is important to know exactly, they will ask you how you make it and how you're measuring that.

With regard to the guide on the pack, I *think* the amount they recommend for a given age is the same on the powder and the ready made packs, so they must be going by total made up volume. Again though, it doesn't matter as long as your LO is happy and healthy. They're only very rough guidelines on the packs.

I always assumed it was the amount of water you started off with.

the amount of water, so yes the actual volume in the bottle would be more than what you are telling them.

Our paediatrician told us that it was the made up amount. Not sure what to think now!

I've always been told and always gone by the amount in the bottle. If you make a 7 scoop bottle, its normally up at 8oz+ when made. If baby leaves an oz I'd never say they'd drunk 6oz, theyve drunk 7. Nutritional info is given as made up. If you generally give your baby a 7 scoop and they finish the bottle but you need to give ready mix one time, would you give them the amount they drink or 7oz? Definitely should always be how much is in the bottle.

I always think about number of scoops to represent number of ounces but my packet does say 90ml water with 3 scoops is 100ml milk. I don't think it matters really cos my LO always spits up loads so I'd never get an accurate amount anyway.

I didn't know that there was a difference for the longest time. I was counting 2oz water and 1 scoop and 2 oz. Now I make a larger batch and pour into bottles so if I need 2 oz I am only pouring 2oz and not adding the extra amount.

I say as long as you are consistent with your way of tracking and your baby is growing fine with no special needs, you are good to use what ever method.

Me and my OH have gone by how much is in the bottle once it's all mixed. LO is on 8 ounces of water and 8 scoops of milk powder which takes it to 9 ounces in the bottle. As he's drinking 9 ounces of milk, i just say it as 9ounces instead of 8.
