Afternoon ladies

DH and I have been thinking about nursery themes and we both like the idea of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

It's nice and colorful and stimulating, and will be unique as we will have to make most things ourselves.

From looking on google and eBay etc there is no ready made items for this theme. The closest thing I have come across are fabrics on eBay which I can buy by the yard to make quilts, cot bumpers, Curtains etc.

The fabrics are in America and the prices don't include import duty so no idea how much that would be.

What I'm looking for ideas of are other decorations for the Walls etc, and also any ideas for making the fabric items out of materials I can get easily and how to bring them into the theme.

The couple of things we have come up with so far are a height chart as the caterpillar, a 3d caterpillar on the wall stuffed with wadding and each section of the caterpillar would do something different- squeak / crinkle etc. Also a magnetic board, and I would make the different foods out of foam and cover them with material and attach magnets in them so they can be moved around to create different pictures etc.

I'm looking for as many ideas as possible to make the theme of the room obvious but not cluttered or over the top.

Look forward to reading your ideas!

Thanks!

SOunds like a lovely idea, how about a number or letter caterpillar, each letter or number on a circle joined together? Post some pics when you're done, would love to see it x

Fantastic idea! Educational too!

Thanks!

I will make sure I post pics, I'll probably be in third tri by the time it's done!

Baby's room is my DH's sons room which he only stays in twice a month, don't want to move him out of there too early, but really want to get started on the nursery. DH's son will sleep in the attic room on a futon bed when he comes when we do move him out of there.

Thanks again for the ideas!

What a great theme...I haven't seen much very hungry caterpillar stuff...a few stuffed toys etc...what I have seen is thsi from Blooming Marvellous:

IKEA do a leaf canapoy, you could fix it over the cot maybe or get a few together somewhere in the room?
https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60054636

you could paint a bitten apple on one wall? do you have a copy of the book as insperation?

- great idea by the way- cant wait to see it finished

That leaf is very cool!

Try this link for a cushion:

Also just a few ideas, how about:

Finding a cot mobile at a boot sale or on freecycle and swapping the dangly toys for very hungry caterpillar ones. (make sure they're attached well)

Make a rug out of red furry fabric to look like an apple or ikea often do round red and green ones which may look like apples.

Cot bumper and nursery quilts - you can buy patterns for these from sewing shops look for the pattern makers Burda or Simplicity as they usually do things like this. It will give you the template and instructions to make your bumper. Alternatively you could buy a cheap bumper out of ikea, tesco.com or ASDA direct (usually about £7) and cover it with your fabric.

You could make a big squishy bean bag from your fabric, you can get the filling balls on ebay.

If you knew someone arty or are good at drawing yourself, how about stencilling or painting some of the characters onto the wall.

Hope these give you a few ideas.

I love this theme! Wonderful! I am very uncreative but can't help with that but Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire has lots of Hungry Caterpillar stuff - mobiles etc. I saw it all when I was about 10 weeks so didn't want to buy but I'll be back some point soon!!! Good luck with it xx

Hey .. lovely idea for a theme! I bought the book and little hungry caterpillar toy from Tesco yesterday for £5. I also saw in the recent jojomamanbebe catalogue they had some hungry caterpillar theme stuff, but cant remember excatly what.

Enjoy!

Great idea!!! Ikea also do Flower lights and bug lights etc so although not specifically hungry caterpillar could definitely fill out the background plus the leaf canopy that was mentioned before is lovely!!! def send some pics when youve done it xxxx

Thank you all! These ideas are wonderful!

I love the leaf canopy, and the idea of covering the cot bumpers with my own choice of fabric.

All brilliant stuff! I have shown hubby all the replies and he is liking all the ideas too!

Thanks!!! Xxx

BloomingMarvellous have quite a few Hungry Caterpillar Items, also if you Ebay it there are a few cushions and blankets people have made themselves on there, very clever :)

You could get a copy of the book and frame various pictures or pages and put them on the walls, Ikea do a Green Bug Lamp which we are getting as we are having a bug/in the garden theme. I didnt like the Big Leaf Canopy because we only have a small nursery so it would just get in the way lol, looks cool tho!

also on jojomamanbebe they have wall transfers of trees with bugs and butterflies and so on, that would make it bug themed :)

Ive seen ride on caterpillars and snails in Mamas and Papas and also in boots at the moment they have 3 for 2 on toys and they have hungry caterpillar toys in there.

Hope that helps :) xx

You lot are clearly far more imaginative than me but just wanted to say what a fantastic idea! xx

KayCee114, have you started on your nursery yet? We're also doing the Very Hungry Caterpillar, so I'd be interested to hear if you had any more ideas!!

not started on the nursery yet, before our gender scan i thought we were having a boy and this theme seemed to fit well for a boy. now i have found out we are having a girl, i am edging more towards princesses, fairies, butterflies and woodland theme etc as seems more fitting for a girl...

i will still be putting some very hungry catterpillar themed things in the room, maybe around the bottom of the walls if we do a woodland theme as it will need bugs and caterpillars wont it...!

i have a really ambitious plan for the nursery now.....

so far, in my head, it looks like....

3 out of the 4 walls in woodland theme, complete with fairies, butterflies, glitter, trees etc all painted on...

then on the 4th wall... from the edges there will be a few trees each side, getting fewer and fewer as they go into the distance, and then in the very distance will be cinderellas castle with the disney princesses and the pumpkin carriage outside.....

DH is fantastic at drawing and painting, and he seems to be up for doing it, but i know it will take a lot of work.

i'm trying to think of something a bit more simple, but i really have my heart set on the massive murel on one wall...!

what do you think?

xxx

Wow, that sounds superb!!! I wish I had a hubby that creative...the most mine will do is paint the walls white!! Heehee.

I am hoping you post some photos when you're done, what a lucky little girl!

Thanks. It looks fantastic in my head... but then things always do dont they!

I keep fogetting that the room is quite small too so i dont want to put too much in there and make it look cluttered.

I'm sure that somehow, i will get it some where close to how it looks in my minds eye!

I cant wait to see pictures of your nursery when it is done!

I was in hobbycraft today and they have 3 different types of very hungry caterpillar fabrics if you were wanting to make curtains, duvet, cot bumper etc... They have one with large pictures of the leaf, butterfly and caterpillar on, one with all the food with the holes in, and one with just the 'spots' of all the food he has eaten through. They are lovely!

I was thinking of making a beanbag or floor cushions with them. Dont know if you have a hobbycraft near you?

xxx

Thank you for that tip!! I'll go to hobbycraft tomorrow xx
