Hi ladies,

Have any of your lo's had croup? My 13 month old dd has been diagnosed with it today after a terrible night with a barking cough, she's had a steroid from the doc and calpol as her temp was 40 :( just wondered how long it lasts in anyone else's experience?

Thanks!

It lasts a few days. It pretty much completely goes away during the day though! Only symptoms are usually at night.

Sophia had it about a month ago. A cool mist humidifier in her bedroom at night helped and also running a super hot shower and sitting in the bathroom with the steam broke up all of the junk in her throat, too.

No cough meds or anything will work. Just have to make sure she can breathe ok and let it pass. :nope:

Hope your LO feels better soon!

My LO has had this a few times hun, it's really horrible but shouldn't last long, especially with steroids.

Agree with the poster above- get a humidifier for her bedroom at night, we've got a Vicks one which is great. If she's really struggling then put the shower on really hot and steam up the bathroom.

Other than that just lots of cuddles and try and keep them as chilled out and rested as possible.

Hope your LO is better soon!

Yep, Charlie has had it twice and same as your LO he got the oral steroids and temp meds :( It is horrible but the humidifiers help a lot and some Karvol in the bathroom with lots of steam before bed. There's nothing much you can do except ride it out and make sure LO is comfortable - I have a feeling Charlie is going to get it again soon, he has chickenpox right now and is starting to cough like mad :( At least I'll know it's croup now - the first time he was 10 months old and the noise is terrifying if you don't know what it is! Hope you're LO gets well soon :hugs:

Thanks for all the advise ladies, think we will just have to ride it out, I'm going to bed when she does tonight so I can hopefully get some sleep before it all starts. I don't have a humidifier (might get one tho!!), I have a plug in calpol thing which I normally use when she has a cold, is that any good? Plus vapour rub on her chest and feet etc xx

Evan had croup at about the same age and the first night it was so bad he stopped breathed and was blue lighted to a&e :-(

He was given a large dose of oral steroids which made a massive difference and a second dose on the morning and it quickly improved overall.

The consultant said croup is always worse the first night and should get better each night. Steam inhalation is good (we took Evan in a steamy bathroom to get him breathing again) and keeping bed elevated etc.

Daisy had croup really badly not so long ago. After about 5 days she was completely better.

I hope your LO is better soon x
