Cycling lowers chances? UGH.

My DH and I started TTC about a month ago. I’m 29 and he’s 32, so I already anticipate it won’t happen too quickly. But I was just doing some reading and, to my horror, discovered that male cyclists tend to have a lower sperm count and sperm mobility. This made me a little disheartened because my DH is strictly a bicycle commuter. His commute to work is only about four miles round trip, but he also cycles for longer distances (30-40 miles) on the weekends. He doesn't drive, so there's no getting around it, really.

Anyone else who is trying have a DH who cycles a lot? I’m afraid to keep reading the studies because I feel like they’ll bum me out. As if we don’t already have age working against us, there’s that on top of it. Before tonight I had no idea that might be affecting our chances. Sigh…

Well, not strictly the same situation.. but my brother cycles everywhere & managed to get his gf pregnant :) If you're worried though, it might be worth getting him checked out so you know for sure xx

I'm an avid cyclist, and I've been on DH's case to get into it, too. But he was paranoid about his sperm count, so he kept refusing. I told him to do some research--real, scientific research, not anecdotal--and he learned that it's really only an issue if a man is cycling more than 2 hours a day every day (like 15 hours a week). And even then, every man is different, so one man's sperm count might decrease, another's might not.

Just keep trying. I know LOTS of cyclists who have happy, healthy children.

Thanks Sarah, that makes me feel a lot better. Or at least a lot more rational, haha. :) All of the reading I did was just the anecdotal type.
