Following on from the thread that mentioned that eating more dairy products could improve your chances of conceiving, I'm a bit put off dairy after I heard that because of the hormones that they inject into the cows so that they keep lactating, their poor udders get infected through constant use and therefore causes them to leak pus which obviously gets into the milk which we drink. And this is the worst part.. They are legally allowed to sell milk which is made up from a quarter of pus. Now that is truly rank and has completely put me off dairy products all together.. so i think i'll stick to rice milk and soy milk!

My friend was brought up in a farm and she said the pus thing is not true and an urban myth!!!! But hey, if that's what you've heard, it might be that some farms are like that ... gross!

Anyway, once you fall PG, your midwife bangs on about making sure you drink milk as it's an essential part of helping your baby grow, particularly in the first 3 months. I'm not sure if they specify what sort of milk but I have a feeling it's cow milk they dish out to underprivelged pregnant women (Swiss Miss knows about this I think) so u might wanna check that out b4 dismissing cow's milk. It might make u feel bluh but it might be essential for a developing baby - and remember that in the first 2 weeks of it's life, u might not yet know your PG and drinking milk then might be important.

Remember, there's a lot of urban myths out there too about food and such so don't beleive everything u hear!!!!!! x

About the pus?!

Everything you said!
Some of my Mum's side are dairy farmers. I dont like the idea of keeping the cows lactating but I was lead to believe it was simply the repeated milking that keeps it coming much like a woman breast feeding - I may be wrong.

..Just found this on the 'milksucks' website...

Dairy products are a health hazard. They contain no fiber or complex carbohydrates and are laden with saturated fat and cholesterol. They are contaminated with cow's blood and pus and are frequently contaminated with pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics. Dairy products are linked to allergies, constipation, obesity, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases.

The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it can cause anemia, allergies, and insulin-dependent diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease, America's number one cause of death.

And dairy products may actually cause osteoporosis, not prevent it, since their high-protein content leaches calcium from the body. Population studies, backed up by a groundbreaking Harvard study of more than 75,000 nurses, suggest that drinking milk can actually cause osteoporosis.

Milksucks - I wonder what their slant on it is?? Not sure they are the most objective group......

The wording is very provocative. Starting a sentence with 'DR So and so speak out about feeding milk to kids....and end ending it with 'setting them up for obesity and heart disease, America's number one cause of death'
I dont believe for a minute America's problem with obesity and heart disease can be linked to kids drinking cows milk.

I think it's usually more the Corporate-owned factories than the small family farms that are doing this.

The late Dr. Benjamin Spock says ALL milk sucks according to that!

Think inactivity and a diet dripping in fat may have more to do with obesity problem than drinking milk. My children love milk and they don't have any of those medical problems. Isn't milk sterilised?/ zapped before we drink it?

Yeah, I think milk isn't the only thing that's making people obese!.. I think we have Mcdonalds and everything else to blame for that! But I am put off by what they say about the big factories and I'm sure there is alot of disgusting things they're doing that we're not aware of. I find is easy to avoid milk when it comes to what you put on your cereal but avoiding chocolate is so hard! My brother's a vegan and reckons vegan chocolate is just as good but how often do you see vegan chocolate?

The links below should help, bit more reliable than MilkSucks or whatever it's called. When it comes to trying for a baby and ensuring the health of a developing baby, you gotta follow expert advice as far as I'm concerned (but also not go OTT about it all). And all the reliable and good and non-commercial sources say drinking cow's milk is important.

But if you're really adverse to it, I'm sure there's other ways of getting the nutrients provided by milk, maybe there's some vitamin tabs out there for you?

the result of hormones on dairy cows..

[Pictures removed by admin]

people would believe anything these days and i think a lot of times organizations and media put out so many health hazards for ANYTHING. I bet i can find something that claims i will go blind if i am on the computer for more than 30 minutes at a time. Or something like i will get cancer if i leave my toothbrush in the bathroom and not sealed in a tightly closed sanitary container. Drinking milk can cause infections and is a health hazard...just another one.

How i see it is people have been drinking milk for YEARS and if it's a health hazard, the FDA would have taken it off the shelves years ago. the only health hazard i see from milk or dairy is if you happen to be lactose intolerant.

we can all post pictures. there's always more than 1 side of the story.

And how do you actually know that these pictures are as a result of hormones? They could be as a result of anything. I could have posted the picture Samo did and said 'as a result of eating fillet steaks and bread and butter pudding'

I have removed some pictures above.

I find them completely unnecessary sorry.

Even if the pus thing is true, my future developing baby comes first over my political / humanitarian views. I'm a bit selfish like that but I understand why some people want to stand by their strong beliefs and concerns so each to their own.

So let's ligthen this topic a little - considering the post earlier re: ice cream, my mate does these AMAZING milkshakes with milk and ice cream so I'm off to make one :-) Yumsers! (I'll just try to block out the pus image, barf!)
