hi all im on day 3 of the metformin and i feel awful i am nauseous feel dizzy and have a major headache is this normal? i have pcos so dr thought it might help me to lose weight and start ovulating again has anyone had any success

I was on metformin for a couple of months.
They made me feel ill.
I couldn't eat and I lost a huge amount of weight, I would just cry at the dinner table cause i felt so ill.
I also had chronic heartburn from them.

Personally I wouldn't take them.

Hope this helps
xx

I'm on Metformin, have worked my way up to 2000mg a day. At first the side effects were terrible and I gave up on them more than once. However, I stuck it out this time and have been on them for 8mths or so. They are really helping with the weight loss and that in turn is helping with ov I think! It's worth seeing if you can stick it out and how you get on with them once the side effects pass or ease (hopefully they do) xx

I'm also on Metformin after being diagnosed with PCOS back in May. Currently on 1700mg a day. I felt very queasy and had headaches and upset stomach for the first couple of weeks but now I have no trouble. It definitely helps when taking them after food, because a couple of times i took them when i was out, with no food and felt awful an hour later. We had a scan about three weeks ago to check the baby was ok but at the same time he checked my ovaries and there was a definite improvement and a lot less cysts. I'm coming off it in 3 weeks though because of the baby... If the Doc has suggested it, i would give it a couple of weeks and see what happens ;) Hopefully the feelings will disappear.

thanks at least im not the only one i have felt so rotten all day and was at the gym this morning and thought i was dying lol. im gonna hold out for a bit and see if it eases off as its worked for others and hopefully between these and going to the gym daily i may lose the weight and return everything to normal fingers crosed for a bfp xx

I am also on Metformin, I would suggest taking them after food and drinking lots of water.

I have also got these books which have really helped me:

The GI Diet: The Easy, Healthy Way to Permanent Weight Loss - Rick Gallop

Rick Gallop's Express GI Diet for Busy People - Rick Gallop, Ruth Gallop

Rick Gallop's GI Diet Green-Light Cookbook: 100 Green-Light Healthy Eating Recipes and Lifestyle Tips - Rick Gallop

and

Managing PCOS for Dummies - Gaynor Bussell

I hope these help

Unfortunately those side effects are really common. I've been on them almost a month and I still have stomach issues, but the headaches are mostly gone. I still get them occasionally, but not as bad as when I first started.

I have PCOS and have just been prescribed Clomid. I have trouble losing weight but have never been offered Metformin. In fact the FS has never even mentioned it. What do metformin do?

i was on metformin for about 6mths, i have pcos to, it never helped with ovulation nor did it help with weight loss.

But i never had any side effects from it tbh, but i am also on my 3rd mth of clomid and still not ovulating. But i used to take metformin at night as i do the clomid to sleep thro the side effects x

my 3rd ICSI was under a dnew doctor and he did several things differently. One of them was, to put me on Metformin. I am not overweight (110lbs @ 5'5") but I do have mild PCOS. It didn't make me lose weight, but was for the sole purpose to regulate my insulin. It didn't cause as many / bad side affects that many of you have faced...just made me more tired. However, this time, Egg collection (30 eggs) was almost painless while in the last 2 ICSI's, I was bedridden for a week. I got preggo. So I believe it truly helped.

i have been on metformin 1700mg since july 09, it has not helped me lose weight or regulate my cycles! i am only takin it so i can prove to the doctor it doesn't work for me.

i felt like rubbish the first two weeks, but it soon got better and now i don't have any side effects at all. it is definately better to take it after meals as the food lines your stomach and the nausea is much more bearable.

stick with it, i know people it has worked for, but you gotta give it a chance.

i'm hopefully starting clomid in october :happydance:

i've just been given metformin! haven't been diagnosed with pcos they r doing a scan for me nxt week. I wanted clomid and they wont give it to me until i have a scan! i was balling my eyes out today at my FS app as my bloods show im not O'ing! dont think it will do much by itself! i could do with losing more weight tho. think they gave it to me to shut me up more than anything! will start them to moz. good luck girls. xx

I just started Metformin today for an unknown hormonal imbalance consisting of high testosterone and high DHEA.

How long did it take side effects to start if you had them badly? I took my first pill 5 hours ago on a full stomach and I feel fine, hope it's a good sign.
