I've had two or three done. They can see a lot. They can make out arteries and structures and such. It is scary to have done, but doesn't hurt or anything of course. It is just like an ultrasound only it is just of the heart. The ones that I had, they checked the flow of blood and could tell what direction it was going and quantity. They could also tell if the valves and other parts are formed properly. They might record the heart beating to look for abnormalities. They did that when I had my first one, but there are definite abnormalities. It took about an hour to do.

my son had an echo done when he was 2 weeks old and then again when he was 6 months old, they are pretty neat as long as everything is okay!

I have had a couple done hun, my baby has a very small hole in her heart that they found doing the fetail echo but didnt pick up at the normal 20 week scan, so that tells you how close that they can see.

I was born with a hole in my heart that closed up in my teens so was referred just in case, bu if they do pick up anything at the special scan, they know that it is there and can plan what they are gonna do next, its just like a normal ultrasound!

Thanks for all your info girls :flower:

It's on Monday so getting a little nervous now its getting closer!

Glad I found this thread.

I am having a detailed scan on 19th March for baby's heart. My DD was diagnosed with two holes in her heart this tim last year, she was 4 months old when she had her open heart surgery to repair it, so far so good.

But now being pregnant again they want to take extra care. When I have the scan they may treat it as my 20 week as well, just concern that the baby's heart maybe still to small to detect defects. DD's holes wouldn't have picked up had I had the same done with her, but you can imagine emotions are high.

Did you ask for further scans of did they do them routinely?

Hey hunny,

The reason I had mine was because there was an increased nuchal measurement at 12weeks which seems to have corrected itself now. So I had a detailed scan at 16 weeks a normal routine 20 week scan and the detailed heart scan at 20 weeks (which she did also look at everything else too!)

Everything has come back clear so far

Hope you get the same result :hugs:

I had mine at about 21 weeks, they zoom RIGHT in on the heart and make sure all is how it should be, afterwards i got a piece of paper that explained everything was ok and if there was anything major it would have been picked up BUT theres tiny chances they can miss small things xx

Oh i forgot to add, they only looked at the heart, didnt even zoom out and let us see baby :( xx

Excellent, glad it went so well for you. Thats great. :hugs:

What they say makes no sense, see for us they say if you have 1 baby who has had a heart defect the chances of another is high but the chances of that actually happening is low if that makes any sense?! So fingers crossed.

Oh my goodness, that makes no sense at all to me!! How can it be high risk and low risk at the same time??!! :dohh:

I'm sure everything will be fine with your LO, fingers crossed for you hunny
