Decision behind the name

I love to use family names, or variations of them especially for middle names. I'm not the type who will go all the way up the family tree to a distant relative I didn't know and don't even know his story. It needs to have a significance for me personally, or else it's a name like any other name.

For my daughter, her middle name is Claire, my mom's name.

For my son, it was going to be my last name since I wanted to use it as part of a hyphenated double last name and decided against that idea... But when I told my dad, the person who felt most strongly about my son having our last name, that I would use it as a middle name, he was mostly upset that it wasn't going to be used for real as a last name... So on-the-spot at the hospital, upset that this was his reaction when it was for him, I just chose a random name I like that has no meaning. Kind of regret that one!!

For my expected baby boy, I haven't started thinking about it, but if it was a girl it would've been my husband's grand-ma's name.

We have Alice Heidi, Alice is my nans name who is still going strong at 95, Heidi we both just loved, and it turns out it's a German name so that was nice as hubby's mum is German, but that was purely a coincidence.

Our little girl due in march is Hazel Faith.... Hazel because it's a name we both love...and Faith because of our faith in God :)

When I was around 12/13 years old I read a book and the little girl in it was called Tegan and I fell in love with the name and it stuck with me. I actually spelled my daughters name slightly differently but it is still the same name. Her middle name is Lily and that's just because me and DH loved that name and thought it flowed really well with her first name.
My DD2 is named after my Granny. My Granny's middle name is Bell, after her auntie was was named Bella. My DD was nearly called Bella but I preferred Isabella. My Granny's Great-Granny was called Isabella, so it's a name that has various variants floating around our family tree. Her middle name is Margaret and it's mine, my Mum's and my other Granny's middle name, so she's the 4th generation to have it.

Harrison - OH's Nana's maiden name
John - OH's grandads name
Stephen - my step-dads name (I wanted him to have a connection to baby since he isn't blood related)

So why did you decide on your babes name...or the reason on behind you going to pick your babes name....

Delaney Jane-OH and I both love it....Vera-OH's grandma's name, and babe is due a year exactly after his grandma passed.

Joesph-My baby brother's name who passed at 6 weeks old...Carter-We both agree'd on it.

since you started this to explain choices can I be rude and ask why you chose the strange spelling?

I'm confused. What's strange about any of those spellings?

Joesph just seems mispelled, if it is a legitimate name then its very obscure and will probably be commonly mistaken for Joseph

Joesph would be pronounced Jo-s-f as there is no seperating vowel instead of Jo-sef which needs with the e after the s to produce the syllable

ive just never seen that spelling before and a quick google stuggles to find any legitimate history of it other than as a mispelling, it doesnt seem like the OP has made a typo as he wrote it that way multiple times so I was just wondering how she came up with it

I was wondering the same thing :flower:

I really enjoy reading all the posts.

My husband and I like biblical names so we have tried to incorporate that into the names we've picked.

Gabriel Adam
Gideon Noa
Roman Kai

Gideon and Roman have Hawaiian variation middle names. My husband is Hawaiian/Japanese and wanted to incorporate that, and I needed names I could pronounce :haha:

Lucas Michael Paul Ott
Lucas was the only boys name SO and I could agree on, and agreed it would work as a child and as an adult.
Michael, is my SO's name, my dads name and SO's grandfathers middle name.
Paul is SO's dad's name.
Ott is my last name, because SO is embarrassed of his last name and got made fun of a lot and didn't want Lucas to go through it too.
:)

Oh, and he has 2 middle names, because I only have one and SO has 3 so I compromised. Any other children I have will be the same.
I put a lot of thought into names. I just love them :p

Sean Joseph - oh is John , his father is John and grandfather is John . Sean is Gaelic for John , Joseph after his grandfather

This wee one I'm thinking Regina ( my name ) Maria (my mums name )but the jury is still out . Regina Maria :)

What a clever way to to have originality while still sticking with the tradition with Sean!
And I absolutely LOVE Regina Maria! It reminds me of a beautiful Esmeralda type person for some reason (the appearance not the gypsy dancer part :p)

Thanks jasmine :) conjours up images of a Spanish dancer for me or a Italiian mama !!! Neither of which I am lol.......

Callum - Me and OH have very different name tastes with boys names and we couldn't agree. I went through an entire baby name book and wrote down my 5 favourites and got him to choose out of the 5 which he liked most. His middle names are David (my dad's name) and Edward (DH's middle name)

Amelie - We, again, couldn't agree. He liked Sophia but I thought it was too popular and then we wanted Grace but seemed too old fashioned to everybody else and then settled on Emily but it was too popular again so he suggested Amelie and I loved it. Grace is her middle name and that was because we loved the name and didn't want to have to get rid of it completely.

Next baby if boy will be Oscar just because DH loves it and I quite like it too. Thomas will be middle name because it is my Grandad's name.

Girls we are stuck between Olivia and Rebecca as first names, just because we like them again. Middle name will definitely be Noelle because of my love of all things Christmas and because it's a beautiful name!

My children have middle names after grandparents except my little girl who I am being induced with on Thursday. Her name will be Poppy Louise. We chose the name Poppy because she is being born in November and near remembrance day so thought it was a nice tribute. We chose Louise because it is a name we both like :)

Well we've changed bump from Matilda too Daisy.
Daisy because I wanted it with dd1 and dd2: I don't want anymore children and feel I will regret not using it if I don't this time. X

DD is called Violeta del Carmen - My grandmother was called Violet. However DH is Spanish and we live in Spain so we chose the Spanish version. His grandmother was Carmen so we added her name too as a kind of middle name.

There's also a Chilean poet by the same name and I liked the flow. DD goes by Violeta though....I don't think I've ever called her by her full name.

We have Zachary Conrad. Zachary because

-We both like it
-It's fine on a boy or man of any age
-It's not too weird and not too common
-We think it sounds cool
-The initials are normal
-You can shorten to Zach
-It's not hard to spell

Conrad because

-Mostly the same reasons as above
-He's named after the author Joseph Conrad
-We didn't want this as a first name because it can't be shortened

So BF and I are really weird. Basically, Alex's name was picked out for him before he was even conceived. Alexander was just a name we both liked a lot and James is my father's name. It's a good, strong name and it sounds good with his last name and we both like it a lot. So Alexander James it is :)

My DH and I had my son's name picked out before he was even conceived, too. Same with this baby boy!

With DD - Her name is Athiliya Rose.
Athiliya was a spelling change on "Athaleah" which was the name my mother originally planned for me, but went with something else instead. But it is still written in the back of her Bible which is older than me. Though, by changing the spelling I ended up coming up with a completely different name, that is not even pronounced the same!
Her middle name: Rose - Is both my and my mother's favorite flower, BUT is also a nickname my mother goes by.

SO in the end DD is named in honor of my mother, Who is terminally ill.

With baby #2 who is due on Christmas day. Her name will be Moira Evelynn.

Moira is the anglicized version of Máire which is the Irish version of the name Mary. Mary is the name that runs on my husband's side of the family. Every woman for generations has a version of Mary for their name. And We choose the Irish version because I am Irish and my heritage means a lot to me.
Her middle name: Evelynn really has that much personal meaning. We originally settled with Lynn - a derivative of the name Linda, which my husband loves and I hate. Also my sister's name is "Kaitlyn"= "Lyn" = "Lynn". I ended up not being satisfied with it and we decided to change it to Evelynn, which I find to be a very beautiful name.
So, this baby is named after my husband's family and my heritage. :D Not to mention I am very much in love with the name and have been for 12 years now. ANd some how still in honor of my sister

There is also a this tie in names :
My DD born April 7th 2014 - Athiliya Rose. We call her Lily for short
My sister's DD born October 29th 2014 - Athena LiliRose
My Best Friend's DD Born November 28th 2014 - Sophia Evelyn Rose
My next DD due Christmas 2015 - Moira Evelynn

The A-t-h name was very much deliberate on my sisters part. As well as LiliRose. Lilys are her MiL favorite flower and roses are our mom's fave - and then with my DD being Called Lily - she decided it would be in honor of all 3.

My Best friend only got in touch for the first time in YEARS long after she had decided on a name for her baby. So The Rose was completely unintentional match up to my DD..

And Evelynn was semi-intentional on my part. But when deciding I did not even consider her DD. The name "Lynn" sounds great paired with Moira. And Evelynn is the only name we liked that had "Lynn" in it that paired well with Moira.. AND it is so pretty!
