Read this article & thought it was real interesting. I'm currently observing my Elijah to see if the code works. I must say the 'neh' bit is true for him.

What the Research Shows

Research tells us that the higher-pitched the cries and the shorter the pauses between them, the more urgent and unpleasant adults perceive them to be. Hunger is, of course, a common reason for a newborn to cry. Studies of crying before and after feedings confirm that babies cry less after they are fed. (We're sure you agree!)

The Dunstan Baby Language system may set you on the road to interpreting your baby's cries. This program claims that sensations within babies evoke certain cries:

* "Neh" = I'm hungry
* "Owh" = I'm sleepy
* "Eh" = I need to burp
* "Eairh" = I'm gassy
* "Heh" = I'm uncomfortable

It's called the Dunstan Method.

Hmm I'll have to try to pay attention next time she cries to see if I can recognize any of those sounds!

here's a video which showcases samples of these sounds:

you might need to crank up your volume a bit to listen to it, though.

the "im hungry" cry is nearly what alys has always sounded like since she was a newborn when she cries but she says "ning" instead lol i always say to her "ok mummy will get your ning now" lmao

xx

I used this with Renah and it worked. I knew what she wanted at all times. But, I learnt about this before she was born & used it from day 1. Once they hit 2 months and they haven't been responded to, their cries change. I started signing with Renah at 4 months so now she doesn't cry for anything anymore, she just signs.

two hours of WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGH means don't eat yoghurt mummy, the cow proteins hurt my tummy....

Now that i think about it, its quite true. Gonna write this down and use it with each cry.

mines easy he just crys for feeds lol and the rare time it is not his normally had a poo lol

From day one I used Tracy Hogg's signals to learn to communicate with Jack, it's basically the same but she includes body language as well as vocal signals. It's spot on, I've always known which cry was which.

where's the 'don't leave me playing on my own mummy, i want you to cuddle me all day cause i'm spoilt rotten' cry-thats the only one Ellis does!! When i pick her up its like turning off a switch the cheeky wee monkey and its all my fault!!!

Oscar has consistently cried 'neh' when he wants boob. But not just when he is hungry - anytime he wants boob. I am known as 'neh neh' !!!!

I found the dunstan baby language thing really interesting but the videos were soooooo boring to watch and made me cringe.

Neh has always been Alyssa's cry for food. She doesn't really cry much, so couldn't say how accurate the others are in our case.
