I'll be giving birth under the NHS, maybe home birth but more than likely hospital birth. But I've been reading up on the benefits and risks of delayed cord clamping and wondered if this is something they just do automatically in the UK with births or is it something you have to request?
It wasn't something I was aware of with my first daughter and I really can't remember how long it took them to cut/clamp the cord:flower:

I think you have to request this. I am putting this in my birth plan too.

So fingers cross they listen to me.

I requested this in my first labour and they asked me as soon as he was born. I mentioned it this time round and my midwife said it's standard procedure now but they will usually ask as they put baby on you.

I think it's standard in a lot of hospitals in the UK now, it wasn't with my eldest 4 years ago but I was asked when I had my youngest last year, it'll depend on the hospital but be sure to have it in your birth plan and mention it to your MW, also make sure your partner knows to reiterate it at the time if you're a bit distracted!

It's supposed to be the standard practice in the UK. I think NICE (which sets the guidelines for the NHS) recently changed their recommendation or at least the report was expected out in the past month or so. That said, just because it should be done because the evidence is overwhelming that it's much better for baby, I would still put it in your birth plan that you expect it to be done. I left the cord intact for just over an hour with my first, but even just 3-5 minutes until the cord goes completely white is beneficial.
