Oh poor you, sounds like you are having a really tough time.

Its still REALLY early days and there's no reason why you won't be able to get this sorted and carry on BF'ing him.

I would really suggest that you get to a breastfeeding support group. Do you know if there is one near you? They are the experts and should be able to give you hands-on help on getting him to latch. There are a few helplines you can try and they will be able to give you some advice or point you towards a breastfeeding counsellor. Your MW might also be able to suggest someone. I found MW's tried to help but weren't as good as the specialised BF'ing people.

Helpline numbers:

La Leche Leage - 0845 120 2918
National Breastfeeding Helpline - 0300 100 0212
NCT - 0300 330 0771

In the meantime, I would suggest just keep trying to get him to latch. Have plenty of skin to skin and spend as much time as you can just snuggling up together. My LO wouldn't open his mouth wide either and I found gently pulling his chin down once he was latched did help.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck and definately try those numbers or find a local group

Sarah,I can't give you any advice on the latching on thing just wanted to say how well you are doing to be expressing for him honey, don't give up :hugs: :hugs: You are NOT failing, your little guy is still getting that important breastmilk even if you are pumping at the moment hon.

Loads of hugs and I hope Max susses out the latching situation soon

I'd be giving your OH a smack for a start, how dare he? :grr:

Your LO absolutely can properly bf now, it's not the end. My LO latched on on day one and not again until she was 2.5 weeks old. I fed ebm and topped up with formula and by 5 weeks old, she was exclusively bf :D So it definitely is possible.

My advice would be to keep pumping at least at every feed to keep your supply up. Feed a little ebm so he's not frantically hungry and then try the boob. You could also try nipple shields if LO is confused by flesh instead of a plastic teat.

If you want to avoid nipple confusion, maybe try some cup feeding too. Try as much skin to skin as possible and also try taking a bath together.

Good luck and feel free to pm me if you need anything xx

First off Cal is a div and we all know this so ignore whatever stupid comments he has to make on it, since when did he try and BF a baby? :dohh:
Secondly im so proud of you (wrong choice of words? well u know what i mean lol) for trying so hard! Last i knew you were pretty 'well we'll see' so the commitment your showing is so lovely to hear :hugs:
Thirdly its no way too late for him to learn! Loads of women can get them on after the first week of just expressing so your not too late! Its just perseverance, which i admit is way easier said than done :(
The only advice i can give hun is to do your best to relax, lay around with your top off when hes not hungry and let him snuggle/lay on your chest, try and encourage him to comfort suck iykwim? Just make it so your boobs are something he becomes used to and learns to associate with comfort and security, hopefully that way when hes introduced to them to feed he'll feel calmer and so might go on easier?
Iv heard having a bath with them helps too.
When tommy struggled to latch at times (amittedly i was very lucky that he wasnt too much trouble)id just hold him so the boob was in reach of his mouth and try and just stroke his cheek with the nip and also use my hand to stroke his head and opposite cheek, sshhh him etc
Try your best to keep it calm hun as Max will pick up on your anxiety.
Persevere hun and you will get there dw, it might be tough but im always here if u want a chat or advice (even in the wee hours - u know what time im usually up till lol)
If you want i can pm u my mob if u wanna drop me a txt if ur feelin rlly crapy or at the wits end?
Im always here if u need me hun :hugs::hugs::hugs: xxxxx

(oh and btw no more of this 'im failing' rubbish - your doing a great job and you should be proud of yourself :hugs::))

Connor didnt't latch on when he was first born. I was determined to get him as much breastmilk as I could so I pumped, and topped him off with formula. I tried latching him on everyday with no luck until he hit 6 weeks old. Then one day he decided that he would latch on, and has had no problems since. So don't give up, and keep trying to latch him on everyday.
