Sorry guys, i'm in the wrong section, I am currently WTT however on one there seems to be able to give me any advice.
I have a query about the above thats really got me worried. From the age of about 18 to 23, I'm now 26, I was on the depo injection, I had read a few things about if affecting fertility but thought that surely if that was true then the docs would stop it. When I went to docs about something diff, she asked me wat contraception I was on, when I told her she said "good heavens, thats far too long to be on depo". I didn't read too much into as I am aware that prolonged use can apparently affect bone density(I'm normally very healthy so wasn't worried bout this). She made me come off it right away. Anyway, I had to have blood taken for the separate issue I originally went about, the nurse asked me same thing, when I told her, she said that same thing and actually said, do you know that this can cause infertility? WDF? I've moved to a new doc who says he has never heard such a thing! This has always bn in the back of my mind but now that I'm broody as hell and would like to TTC next year, I'm so worried about this.
Has anyone been on the depo? Can anyone share some stories/advice?
Thanks. Sorry for long post. x

Hiya the thing is all these contraceptives are used and we dont really know how it would affect your fertility later on. Only now the problem is becomeing quite major that lots of couples have infertility probs....dont know why....maybe the contraceptives used

The good thing is that you have come off it now. Dont panic, nothing can be done now, just try and let your natural cycle come back and then hopefuly when you want to try it will be good news

Thanks. I realise its a bit early to worry but I can't help having this stuff on my mind.

Good luck to u with TTC. x

I'm not trying to scare anybody but that depo mess me up when it comes with TTC. I would never EVER use that BC again!!!:cry::cry:

Why were u on depot injection??? Ive been on it for over a year and still on it? I may be able to help

the depot injection can switch off the ovaries (that 's how it works as a contraceptive!!!) it can cause a delay in return of regular cycles and hence fertility and for some this can be ages ie years. It should have been discussed with you when you first went for the depot! it's a well known thing

The only issue with depot, well i take it to control my endo. Ive never heard of it taken it as a contraception. Thats really weird, cause it puts u into temp menapause. You can take it for a long period BUT it can cause low bone density. You must have your bones checked up on a regular basis. With fertility its ok, my fertility clinic gives it to me. It should not cause issues with your fertility. Yes depot should only be taken max 6 months and u need a break cause of the bone issue. Thats it hun. Didnt the hotflushes, mood swings and headaches turn u off it???

From my own experience, my period came back within 2 and half months of last injection. I think thats the norm. Sometimes it can be longer or shorter. Sorry ive never heard of any girls on depot take 1 year for there period to return. Max 5-6 months.

Hi there,

Im afraid that my experience with the Depo is not a good one. I was on it from age 17-24, my nurse also had the same reaction when I went in for my usual top up jab. I'd had never been told that I should take a break from the injection! Whilst on the Depo I LOVED it no :witch: no weight gain and no PMT. DF and I have been TTC roughly 20-21 cycles after being off it for 3 years. We did conceive naturally (unplanned, I was rubbish at taking the pill) but sadly miscarried

Im very relieved that you have decided to come off it before TTC and give your body a chance to get back to normal. They do say that it could take up to 18months for you to get back completely to normal. The brightside is that there are MANY ladies that DONT have any problems with conception after Depo. As with all these things it varies from person to person!

I hope that I have helped in someway!

Very best of luck with your journey and hope not to see you in this section! (meant in the nicest possible of ways) :hugs:

I had the depo injection once in May 07, i am still waiting to conceive! it may not be due to the depo, but i really blame it although now i'll never know! it took me 3 months to get my periods back, bu these only lasted about a day, and it took me 11 months to ovulate again. We have unexplained infertility, so not trying to frighten you cos like i said we might have had this problem anyway. Would never use it again!

I would never ever have depo again even if I was paid millions to have it! I was on it for 5 years and will have been off it now for 3 years in Feb, I did get my period back in the June 3 months afer my last jab and have been regularish since but nothing happening at all on the baby front apart from a chemical back in Dec (and now I'm beginning to think I imagined the 2nd pink line :( I now have unexplained fertility and am going to be prescribed clomid by my fs. I was NEVER EVER warned about the effects it could have on fertility!!

I wasn't on it for any medical reason, I was only 17/18 and kept forgetting to take the pill and accidents with condoms so the doc(a diff one from the one who took me off it) suggested I go on the injection.

The doc who put me on it didn't discuss any o this with me, he wasn't my usual doc, n I think to be honest he was embarrassed to talk about it with me. It was suggested after I'd had an accident and was getting the morning after pil or a preg test, I can't quite rem, and I'd confided in my mum n she was with me at the time I went on it.

Now I think about my usual doc (a woman) was quite good at this type o thing as when she made me come off it, I'd asked about the implant and IUD and she point blank refused to give me either believing em unsuitable for me. I prob shud of went back to her about it but have always one to trust in the wat the doctors says.

I nev had any symptoms, jus no or very light periods, which at the time I thought was great. I'd recommended it to all my friends but thankfully none o em took my advice.

This is exactly what I'm worried about. I've read other things about it (albeit online) which my OH said was complete propaganda. I'm sure you can guess he is against having kids in the near future, wanting to wait til i'm 30, i'm currently 26. When I confided this to him, that it was one of my biggest fears n that at least to try would let me know if there's a problem, but he wasn't concerned.

I'm so sorry you're in this situation. I really hope it works out for u soon. How long have u bn trying? x

Been not trying but not preventing lol since I came off depo it's scary hearing all the stories about people having problems ttc after it, when I saw the doc today he said after 3 years it should be well out of my system so this month I'm really going to go for it the oh won't know whats hit him :happydance:

I'm a healthcare professional working in primary care, hun! I have seen the worst case scenarios, unfortunately. It can take years for cycles and fertility to return to normal in an unlucky few

Hi guys,

I had my last depo in sept 08, therefor TTC since Dec 08. Didnt get my first period til June 09, then Oct 09, then I had a 14 day cycle in november.

fortunatley dec and jan look like standard cycles, I have ovulated, and am due AF tomorrow. Hopefully it stays the hell away!!

I think it does state as side affects that there can be a delay in the return of fertility. But it does seem that docs forget to mention this when prescribing it. its a shame cos I may have made a different decision had I known!

Good luck to everyone xx
