With my daughter I suffered severe antenatal depression. I did manage to get through the pregnancy without any medication. This time I am suffering a bit more as I lost my mother last month. I am trying really hard to avoid having to go on anti depressants and would love to know if anyone else out there is or has struggled with this? and what did you do for it?

Hey, hon. Sorry you're dealing with this, and so sorry about your loss as well.

I had what I would describe as a mild depression in second trimester. Caught me off guard, as I've never really struggled with depression before. I mentioned how I was feeling to my doc and she suggested I try counseling first before medication. So I saw a counselor for three weekly sessions and I have to say, it really helped.

The method my doc suggested (because it has been shown to be effective) is cognitive behavior therapy. I'd say it's worth looking into. I was able to do it because my benefits covered 80% of the fee; not sure if would have been able to afford it otherwise!
