Hi girls, I had my little guy on Monday at 23 weeks gestation. He's fighting bravely in NICU just now and amazing everyone.

Today while hand expressing milk to bring to him I've had to stop half way through and run to the bathroom with a upset stomach.
Does this affect my breast milk? Is it safe for my son? I called the NICU for advice and they 'think' as long as I'm washing my hands before and after it should be ok. I really don't want to take any risks. I've to call back in the morning (it's 4am right now). They did say I might need to stay away for 24/48hrs which I totally understand.

Any advice appreciated thank you xx

As long as you are being tip top perfect with washing your hands and sterilising bottles I think you will be fine. It can be a good thing for mum to be ill while she's breastfeeding/pumping as it can pass on any immunities that you develop to baby, which is one of the reasons why breastmilk is so great for preemies.

I hope you feel better soon though, you must be exhausted, and with being I'll on top. I hated staying away for illness, but as you say, it's the best thing for your bubba now.

Thanks Whistle, Ive not had any since 4am so im hoping its passing! xx

Hope it's still stayed away pink_sparkle.

Agree with whistle bm gives your lo immunity to the things you pick up. I had a few illnesses while bf holly and she never caught them. Xx

Thanks girls, I only had two episodes - I think it's my nerves! I just binned the milk from when I had it xx

Glad you are feeling better. If you don't need the milk and prefer to bin then it's probably for the best.

How is your wee fighter doing?

Thankfully I feel totally fine now! Yeh I just binned that milk. Ashton is doing well, he continues to amaze us everyday. Touch wood he can keep fighting like this. I get butterflies in my tummy when I head to the hospital to see him!

If you want to follow his journey, Ive made a facebook page called AJ's Journey xx

I used to get that as well. The moment of dread as you walk towards the neonatal unit wondering what they are going to tell you. I used to take some comfort in the fact I hadn't received a phone call.

I will look for your FB page this evening as can't get on it in work.
