Did anyone hold their baby straight away?

I did, I nursed her while they stitched me up. its imporant to talk to the doctor about this before hand, they cant read ur minds, so if you want too ask. They may say no, but if you ask they may work with you. The biggest issue is they like to have your arms strapped incase they need to adminster extra medication or if something happens.

I don't think this is standard practice in the UK. It was certainly never an issue for any of my sections

Correct! They don't strap your hands here

I had an EMCS and was able to hold my baby whilst they still stiched me up.

At first the midwifes had her as she was a bit shell shocked but once she cried they gave her to OH, who gave her to me. I held her for about 10 mins then I started getting the shakes, so I made OH sit next to me with her

I had those first 10 minutes and it was lovely, but I wouldnt worry so much if you cant hold baby right away. I was really ill after my section so my LO was with nurses for her first night and then my OH the next day. She was 24hours old by the time I got to hold her properly but that hasnt impacted our relationship at all, shes a real mummys girl.

They don't strap your hands or arms in the US either  Maybe it's only certain hospitals?!

I held my DD within about 5mins of EMCS while they stitched me up. What a beautiful sight seeing my beautiful baby girl. So grateful for those first photos too (we have them in black and white).

I would love the first hold, going to add it to my birth plan!

During my csec me and my OH asked the nurse if I could have skin to skin contact straight away, they said no problem and cut my hospital gown in preparation. When DS was out they cleaned him and put him straight on my chest. It was wonderful and would recommend to anyone. I really didn't think they'd allow it but it wasn't a problem at all.

They offered my son to me but as I felt a bit our of it still I was worried I would drop him! So my hubby held him until I was in bed bed then he snuggled in beside me- baby that is, not hubby ;)

I didn't butmy husband did, i had an emcs. I was shown her for a few minutes and then my dh and baby were taken out of theatre - i was told it was too cold for baby in there :(
It was pretty scary being left for the remainder of the op alone tbh.

I did, even though it was an emergency c-section. Unfortunately, due to the pre-eclampsia, my hands were very swollen and I could only hold for a minute or two (we both sort of looked at each other in shock, I think) and then my OH took LO into his arms...

best wishes

My husband held our son first (with a planned c-section) and as soon I was stitched up and taken into the recovery room he was passed to me. I would not have wanted to hold him right away since I was laying flat and not really in a position I would have felt was safe to hold him. Once in the next room the bed was more upright and I could hold him properly though. So although I did not hold him right away it was not long before I did and DH had him inches away from me as soon as he was checked over anyway.

I haven't had a C/Section but I know of mums (UK) that have had there baby handed to them straight away. Speak to your midwife or obsetrician about your wishes.

My babies were shown to me, kissed by me then taken to adjoining room with husband in tow to get weighed, cleaned off and wrapped up. Then hubby brought them back to my bedside whilst I got sewed up. I then held them in recovery and fed straight away.
