Hey ladies, I shouldn't really be here yet as I'm still pregnant! However, I thought this was the best place to post. Did you bother to buy newborn size clothes, or did you just go straight to 0-3? At the moment we just have 0-3, as I remember from having Amelia that newborn size didn't last long at all.. Although, I don't want baby to look ridiculous in massive clothes! :haha:

I think you could always have some and then if you find your baby is smaller than you thought, it's easy and quick to just order more (they'll be there within a day or so anyway). My daughter was 6lbs 9oz and was in newborn clothes for 3 months and even a bit longer for sleepsuits.

My daughter was 9lb 6oz and wore the next up to 10lb for about 3 weeks and was then in 0-3....we could have just gone straight to 0-3 though. My son was 7lb 12oz and was the same, they were both long babies. X

0-3 is massive and goes up to 14lvs usually so unless you're expecting a 10lber I would definitely get some new born and even then new born is usually big!
I think it depends where you but it from some new born goes up to 10lbs in some places, some goes up to 9lbs or 8lbs.

My daughter was born at 6.12 but long. She was in first size/ small baby for probabky 3 weeks then in new born up until 7/8 weeks (that went up to 10lbs) then she went in to 0-3

My son is 3 weeks old tomorrow and was born at 7lbs 1. He weighed 7.8 as of Friday and is still in a mixture of small baby and first size. He's going in to proper new born soon but is still big, hangs off him and needs the sleeves rolling up. I'll assume he will be in new born for another 4 weeks yet then he wi go in to 0-3 xx

I had a bit of both, everyone was huge on them though because they were premature. They are so big now they wear 18 to 24 months clothes (and they are only 11 months old  )

I'd get at least a few things in a smaller size, just in case.

We were told that our little boy would be between 7.7-8.8lb at full term, so didn't bother buying much in smaller sizes. I bought most things in 0-3, aside from 3 babygrows and 7 vests in Newborn and 3 small baby babygrows that my MIL bought. My LO ended up being 6lb 10oz and literally nothing we had fitted him. My husband had to send his sister out to buy us loads of tiny baby clothes, then she had to take them home and wash them before bringing them to the hospital.

My baby was in tiny baby until around 5 weeks old, so he definitely got plenty of wear out of them. He's now 7 weeks old and 10oz and is wearing newborn clothes- he's just started wearing some of his smaller sized 0-3 outfits.

With my first I only bought 0-3 and had to go out and buy tiny baby as he was so small! This time I luckily had all of DS1's clothes in tiny baby/newborn as DS2 was 6lb 15oz and is still now in a mixture of tiny/early baby clothes and newborn baby clothes, even though he's 9lbs exactly at 5 weeks. I would suggest having at least a few baby grows and vests in newborn, just maybe keep the receipts incase they're too big.

I have a mixture of a few newborn few 1 month and 0-3 months, I got the smaller sizes on offer as he won't be in them long spent bit more on the 0-3 months as he will get a longer time in them.

My son was 9lb 3 oz and he was in newborn for the first month. I suggest you buy at least a few newborn ☺

0-3 in New Zealand is made to fit a baby who is about 62cm long I think, so would have been absolutely gigantic on my kids (50cm and 47cm long). 0-3 fit Thomas from about 8 weeks and Sophie from about 4-6 weeks due to her cloth nappy.

This is Thomas at a few days old in newborn size, it was so huge! He was 3.3kg (7lbs 4oz).

Another newborn size:

And a prem size on him at a week old:

I bought a few sleepsuits in newborn and both my girls fitted them fine. My eldest was 8lb 9oz at birth and youngest was 7lb 7oz but 0-3 was too big on them both.

I've always had some newborn clothes just for the first few days. I always then get ridiculously upset when they out grow them so quickly. My lo was in scbu for 2 weeks and lost lots of weight so he ended up with premature clothes that only lasted him for days literally

I would have some newborn things around. My son was born a fairly average 7lbs 1oz and newborn things were still kind of big on him. He could have fit in preemie things, probably. He did grow fast though, and by 6 weeks old, he had outgrown all the newborn stuff and moved on to 0-3. I regret having so many thing in newborn, because we had so much that he only wore most of it a few times.

My daughter was 8lb, she fit in tiny baby (up to 7lb) for 2 weeks, then newborn for a good month after that x

I know I have big babies (my girls were 9 pounders but more long than chunky) so i've found the 'up to 1 month' size works nicely when mine are newborn for the first couple of weeks. Some of the smaller 0-3s fit straight away though. DD2 had a newborn sleepsuit for going home and she was almost too long for it!

both mine were in newborn for at least 5 - 6 weeks and they werent tiny. (8lb 3 and 7lb 15) id definately recommend it otherwise baby looks swamped

edited - actually alot of there clothes were 'upto 1 month'

Mostly 0-3 with a handful of newborn "just incase he was small". I have no idea why I was expecting to have a 10lbs baby because he came out 6lb 5oz and we had to rush out to buy tiny baby sizes. :haha: He was in those for a couple of weeks, then newborn for another month, and then finally into 0-3.

I wouldn't buy 0-3mths unless like pp said you are expecting bigger than a 9lber. You can always buy bigger once baby is here. My boys 8lb and 7lb 7oz both wore tiny baby for a good few weeks. They had full cheeks but very skinny bodies and looked lost in newborn clothes. Luckily with my first I bought a pack of tiny baby sleepsuits and a pack of vests just in case about 2wks before he was born. I also bought just enough neutral for the first week with the view to buy clothes when we knew if baby was a boy or girl. We also ended up with so many clothes that we didn't need to buy anything for ages.

My second lost quite a bit of his birth weight so didn't get to 10lbs until he was 2mths old. If your baby is similar you'll be well into spring by the time they are in 0-3mths and you might find you have a lot of clothes for the wrong season. (which btw if you get gifts from Next they will swap or give you gift vouchers for. I did this as everyone bought us 0-3 and 3-6mth in winter stuff so I used the vouchers for summer clothes instead).

I would definitely buy newborn. My DD was unexpectedly small at 5lb 2oz and newborn clothes looked ridiculous! Because her clothes were too big she got cold. So off daddy went for some early baby clothes! Bear in mind that obviously newborn baby poo goes everywhere so you need plenty. My son was little too at 5lb 14oz but it was the nappies leaking we had trouble with wee everwhere.

We were told to expect an 8lb-er, so we bought a few newborn bits and most things in 0-3. I took a few of each to the hospital.

When our 10lb 2oz DD was born, the midwife went into my hospital bag to get her a vest, pulled out a newborn one, laughed and said 'that was a bit optimistic', put it back, and put her in a 0-3.

She did fit into a couple of her newborn things, but only for the first couple of weeks while she was around birthweight. Once she started to gain, there was no chance! She did look a bit swamped in 0-3 for the first few weeks, but newborn would have been really tight on her.

She's now nearly 11 months and I'm thinking about putting her into 12-18 months soon. She's not chubby, just really tall, so leg and sleeve lengths are getting a bit short in 9-12!
