Did you throw up during your gestational diabetes test?

I am so terribly afraid of throwing up that I would honestly rather be shot in the head than have a chance of throwing up.

I never threw up during my pregnancy, and haven't for years. If I feel nauseous I get clammy and start to hyperventilate and will start seeing spots (panic attack).

So I am looking for some reassurance...

I have to go for my 3-hour gestational diabetes test on Wednesday morning and I've heard the drink can make you throw up. I've never had it before, so I am quite anxious. They offer more than one flavor (I think they offer cola, lemon-lime, and orange).

ANY SUGGESTIONS? I FEEL LIKE I MIGHT DIE :haha:

But seriously... I do feel like I might die.

They offered me lemon lime or orange. I went for the orange as thats what I had with my other pregnancies. I had 5 minutes to drink it, and it seemed like alot. I wont lie, i did feel kinda queesy, but I got it down and it stayed down. I felt really yucky the first hour. Kinda light headed and shaky from all the sugar and having to fast, but didnt throw up. Bring something with you to keep your mind off of it. once its down, it seemed to be ok. It was the 5 minutes of trying to get it down that was the worst.

:hugs:

I didnt even get a flavoured one :(
I have serious ms and even I didn't throw up (felt a little like it for about 5 minutes)
So if I can do it so can you! :)

Goodluck x

i didnt find drinking it a problem at all but 10 minutes later i felt really shaky and a little nauseated from all that sugar. I went home and had some coffee and some raisin toast and i was all OK after that xo

Drinking it didn't make me throw up, but (last pregnancy) about 30 minutes after drinking it I felt really dizzy and nauseated and had to lie down. BUT I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, so hopefully that is why, and it won't happen to you because you won't have it:)

I almost threw up. It was so hard to get all of it down I had one more mouth full and I got to feeling really bad and started to gag. I had to talk myself down somehow and drink the last bit. I felt horrible and sick the rest of the day.

i didn't think the drink was all that bad.
a little hard to swallow but i just chugged as much as i could at a time lol.
took me the whole ten minutes though..
i didn't feel sick until 2 hours later on the car-ride home. they took my blood after 1 hr though so it was ok.
all in all it wasn't that bad. good luck to you!

I had a fruit punch and a lemon lime flavor last time (1 hour, then 3 hour test) I think they taste great and I never felt the least bit queasy or nauseous. I was starving by the end of the 3 hour, but made sure to have food with me to eat as soon as it was over.

It's sugar dumping and it is EXTREMELY unpleasant. I cannot have the test, I sugar dump on one scoop of ice cream, (any liquid sugar gets me) but they are testing my blood somehow at 28 weeks. I would love to know how many grams of sugar is in that drink....just curiosity. I am not diabetic but my body handles sugar as if I were, I had weight loss surgery 4 years ago. The 1st part of my intestine is no longer used, and anything I eat/drink goes more directly into my bloodstream than normal folks.

I hope you don't puke! I hate it too. I always cry. It sucks.
Would they be able to run the blood test and if that looks wonky maybe then do the drink?

It stinks... I haven't even had the 1 hour test done. An hour before my appointment, I ate a lunch that consisted of mashed potatoes and corn (I usually eat healthy, but today not so much :haha:) and then I had a canned coffee with 40g of sugar. I could hardly finish it within the hour of my appointment because I don't tolerate the taste of sweet things well!!

So it wasn't a surprise to me when they said my blood sugar was elevated... all within an hour I had eaten an extremely large amount of carbs and sugar. But they didn't listen and went into a tizzy and scheduled my 3 hour test.

You seem to be the exception to the rule... and I shall use you as my role model! :haha:

I don't think I'd care for fruit punch too much, but will choose lemon lime or orange depending on which flavors they have.

Quite honestly it's not often that foods or drinks make me nauseous (I can't even recall a time when eating or drinking something has made me feel icky), but I just get paranoid because of my paranoid, unrealistic fear of throwing up.

Oh I would demand a retest. That's goofy of them not to even consider your sugar intake. Of course it was elevated! I bet you are fine.

I failed the 1 hour last time, which is why I had the 3 hour one and I didn't eat lots of carbs or anything, apparently that's really common. I passed the 3 hour one though. My midwife stopped offering the 1 hour test because of all the false positives and just has everyone take a 2 hour test instead. I guess they're just that more accurate if you fast. To me the drink tasted like soda that didn't get enough carbonated water added, so just extra sweet. I get my 2 hour test on Nov 22nd for this pregnancy. They keep it chilled at our place and I could see where if it wasn't cold it'd be harder to drink.

Yeah, I never have taken the 1 hour test. They just randomly tested me via a finger prick during my regular doctor appointment today.

Hopefully it'll be cold...

Are you allowed to drink water? She didn't specify.

Just had my 3 hour today. I had the orange and I would call ahead and make sure they do chill it. It is not good warm. The lemon lime is icky I had it last pregnancy. Jut try to think you are drinking flat orange soda. I have bad morning sickness. I did not throw up from this drink. I did go to mexican food HOURS later and was brushing my teeth and THIS caused me to throw up. I do very often from this though. Just do not psych yourself out any more. 5 minutes is a lot more time than you realize. Don't guzzle it...take a bit of time. I felt a bit sick for a few minutes after but it passed quickly. Did you mean water during the test? I saw a lady having it and she was guzzling it but I asked and the lab tech said you are not suppose to but a sip if needed. I didn't chance it. You will honestly be ok! My 15 yr old has this phobia of vomiting and I feel so sad for her. If we have the flu, she will not eat for days for fear of catching it and vomiting. I am sorry you have this and hope your test goes great! I think it will though. It is really not as bad as people say at all. Oh and Peggy, the glucose drink has 50 grams of sugar, I googled it the other day.

I had hyperemesis and during the 2 hour wait i felt quite sick and had to lye down in a cool room but i managed not to be sick cos i knew id have to do the test again but then after id ot home and eaten thats when i was sick and was sick for the rest of the day!!

I think having servere sickness had something to do with it even to i hadnt been sick since 18 weeks!

I also have emetophobia. :( It is horrible. I didn't even think that this test could make me sick. I have no idea how it is done here in Canada. I have my next doctor appt on Friday and will ask him a million questions about it then. I haven't had any blood tests for my blood sugar yet, but they do check my urine for sugars every time. I have a weird reaction to what my body thinks is low sugar - low sugar reactions but blood tests don't show low blood sugar - so I have no idea how my body will react to that much sugar.

I really, REALLY hope you don't get sick. I know just how you feel :hugs:

Thank you :hugs:

I am sure I won't get sick... but of course, being so unreasonably afraid makes me utterly paranoid.

I will be sure to update on how it went! I have it tomorrow in the morning (US time of course).

I feel so stupid being so afraid of getting sick. I feel for people who are afraid of needles, because that must be horrible too. But for me, I'd rather they stick me with 20 needles then throw up!!!

I'm such a baby. :baby:

I totally understand the fear of being sick, I was really worried about this too. I've just got back from my GTT this morning. It was the 3 hour test and it was much better this time round than when I was expecting DS.
Firstly, they gave me Lucozade (like Gatorade) and that was much better to drink than the syrupy goo. My MW said a lot of places are switching to commercially produced drinks like this as women were feeling faint and sometimes being sick with the horrible clear drink. She also said to take Lucozade with me so if they didn't have it I could say I preferred it and opt for a better taste. I don't know if this is an option for everyone as each place seems to have different rules but could be worth investigating.
They worst thing was sitting upright in a chair, feeling a bit woozy, but I tried to concentrate on reading or playing games on my phone. When it was all done, they gave me a complimentary ham sandwich :happydance: I sat and ate it like a mad woman!
Hope you won't encounter any sickness but def worth discussing with people first to see what options their might be to make it less of a worry for you. :hugs:

Yeah, I think if I had to do it again because I threw up I'd just literally fall over dead instead... but I'm sure I can make it!

My husband was laughing at me worrying about the miniscule possibility of me throwing up and not being afraid of all the needles! He said he'll buy me a present if I go to my appointment (I have been saying I'm just going to skip it and eat like I'm diabetic anyway :haha:)

But of course I must go! :(
