Hi, I'm fairly new to this part of the forum. But after looking around, I didn't see a thread about advocacy for the handicap/disabled population. So, after getting the ok from one of our lovely staff members (thanks Tiff!), I decided to put together this thread. What does being a advocate for someone who has disabilities or someone who has a loved one or friend with a disability, you ask? It means you stand up for your rights as a citizen in your current state/province/country, you educate people on what your disability is, you teach people the proper etiquette and try to discourage them from using slang or otherwise improper words (and let's face it, some of those words like ******, imbecile and lame can really hurt someone of a handicapped status if used negatively). I realize the world may not view us like everyone else, but with a little positivity, education and patience, we can teach. :flower:
So here are some links if any of you would like to read on being an advocate. These are going to be separated by the proper country.

Looks great hun! Always good to have resources around, I'm learning more and more with our TIPP and IEP meetings for Claire that we're going to need some advocacy.

I was wondering if there was a chance this could be stickied as well. If not, it's alright. And yeah, I had IEPs all throughout my school years. Depending on what the teacher goes over, it can last anywhere from a few minute to an hour or two.

I had IEPs too when I was growing up- my parents probably attended all of them, but I started joining in these when I was in high school. There are some info I wish my parents had when I started mainstreaming alone in public high school. Oh well.

This is a great idea! People often do not know how to find the resources or how to advocate for their friends or children who have various disabilities.

I can see this being a great thread to anyone who is unaware of this information!
