I opened a brand new sealed tub of cow and gate milk last night to find:

absolutely disgusting :growlmad:

EWWWW WTF? Where did you get it from? How on earth would a bug live in a sealed tin?

No idea, there were loads of them when I first opened it last night, put it outside and took that video in the morning when that was the only one walking around. It was from Tesco bought a few hours before I opened it, completely sealed so theres no way they could have got in.

omg that is disgusting! have u complained! i defo would, and also phone the enviromental health, yuk

Yes I have complained they want me to send it back.

It looks like a flour weevil.

That's the first thing I thought of too but I didn't think you would get them in baby formula.

I'm not sure what to say, it's good you spotted it before you made up the bottle but it certainly makes you wonder what hasn't been spotted by any one of us!

That is disgusting. I would write a very angry letter of complaint to the company. Not acceptable at all in a baby's formula
xx

Weevils turn up everywhere, all they need is somewhere dry. Not that I am saying it is usual for them to be in formula, it's not!

Formula will have some sort of binding or caking agent, and any type of powder can harbour weevil eggs.

Nasty though!

I was gonna say, it looks like a weevil. I opened a pack of icing sugar once to find loads of them in there. If you ingest them, they can give you a bad tummy; I don't know if it would be worse for a baby, but I assume so. Make sure you don't store it in your cupboard, because once they get loose you will find them in any open packet of flour, icing, formula, powdered custard etc. If it's been in the cupboard already, you should go through the contents and make sure everything else is weevil free. I check all my baking ingredients as soon as I bring them home, and then store them in a massive tupperware now. At least then you know they won't get infested.

And as far as I'm aware, Cow & Gate and Aptamil are made in the same factory, but I can't be sure. It doesn't mean it's a bad product though, so don't boycott C&G because of it; it's most probably just a bad batch. You should definitely inform them, perhaps quoting the batch number on the pack.

I didnt have it long enough to put it in the cupboard then put it outside afterwards, will the eggs have been in the powder and hatched? I'm baffled to how they lived.

And BTW it doesn't need to contain flour for a weevil to live in it, as far as I'm aware, icing sugar doesn't contain flour and that's where I found weevils

There will have been enough air in there for them to survive, and I think they feed on the ingredients, but I'm not sure  Good thing you spotted though, we should all have a closer look next time we make a feed!

i would deffo boycot cow and gate lol i dont like them at all as a company and that is just outrageous!!!!!!!!!

iv always been recomended to use aptamil by all health proffesionals and used it for a year with no probs!

good luck hun xxx

Ewww hun that's just gross!!!
When you send the tub back, give them a long ranting letter of complaint!
I'm definately gonna check our tubs every time I open them now, and I dont even use C&G lol!

:hugs:

Yep, a classic weavil. Once had my whole cupboard infested with the things thanks to a dodgy bag of flour. They are harmless to adults and the hot water used to make formula would almost certainly kill them but it does look pretty gross! I always check flour before I use it for weavils - put a little on the side and see if any crawl out! They are pretty hard to get rid of and aren't always due to poor hygiene practices but having them in formula is def not ideal.

Cow and Gate and Aptamil are made by the same company (Nutricia) though in the same factory so boycotting Cow and Gate and using Aptamil would have no effect as the money goes to the same company. You would have to go to SMA or Hipp instead. Have heard that Aptamil supposedly has higher quality ingredients but don't know if that's true. I use Aptamil though so will look for weavils in it in future! Would def write a strongly worded letter to Nutricia though and if you have have no luck with that threaten to go to the press - that should get them to listen to you!

Their contact details are :Nutricia ltd; registered company number 00275552, registered address Newmarket House, Newmarket Avenue, White Horse Business Park, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, BA14 OXQ

OMG!!! That is awful. YUK. What the hell. I am glad you spotted that, i will be checking milk all the time now
