Hiya,

Daft question maybe but im wondering if bigger babies do things quicker then smaller babies???

My LO is mr average in weight but his friends are bigger then him and they all seem to be doing things sooner... but his one friend who is of a similar weight is at the same development stage as my LO....

It just got me thinking and wondering really if baby weight effects / impacts the speed of development???

Just a general curious wondering ladies???

My son is smaller than all my friends babies and I would say he is pretty advanced. Maybe I'm biased  He is nearly 6 months, and he can army crawl and clap which is pretty clever for his age I think??

Heavier babies, especially those who are pear-shaped, tend to sit up sooner because of a lower center of gravity.

My LO is less than 5th percentile and was rolling back to front by 3 months, but she didn't have much bulk to throw over.....but she didn't sit unassisted or crawl till 8 months. Still not walking, whereas my friend's baby (they are the exact same age), is a chunk and already walking.

He can sit up too... I really do think it's down to the child. They are all completely different. My daughter was cruising the furniture by now, but she wasn't as vocal, and she didn't clap until way later. They all focus on what they're more interested in. If they're not wanting to move, or sit up, or whatever else, they're just not going to no matter what a development chart tells you they should do  They can't read charts x

My big baby does seem to be hitting physical and social milestones quite early but I put that down to him having genius parents, not his size. :haha:

No I don't think so. Both of mine have been bigger babies and both have been slower at hitting milestones than others that are smaller. For example, Evie is 20lbs already at 7 months and has only just rolled over for the first time! Holly was a heavy baby and she was always slightly later too, didnt crawl til 9.5 months.

Nope, other than sitting at 5 months he was a bit slow in reaching his other physical milestones. He wasn't late but he wasn't early, he rolled over from back to tummy at 5 months, the other way at 7 months, he never rolled over around the place, he was cruising at 9 months, crawling after 1 week, took his 1st step few days before his 1st birthday & was walking confidently at 13 months. He didn't even have a tooth until 1 week after his 1st birthday. He didn't start climbing until he was 18 months.

But he was using words meaning them at 8 months, waving & pointing at 8 months, clapping at 11 months, reciting his ABCs & recognizing them at 20 months, scribbling at 14 months, talking in full sentences using 2 languages at 2 yrs, drawing specific shapes at 20 months, & writing & reading some words at 2.5 yrs.

They're different Hun & they concentrate on what they like xx

I don't think so...my little one is pretty small and has tended towards being pretty advanced so far (she rolled front to back consistently at 7 weeks and back to front at 4 months), and I was told that it might be because she is so light, so it's easier for her to pull herself around!

All babies develop at their own rate, I wouldn't worry about it!!

Nah, id say theyre all different! Paige was a big baby, and really top heavy (huge head!) she didnt roll over until 4.5 months, and only did it for one day. She sat unaided at 5 months, cruised at 7.5months, crawled at 9.5 and walked at 10. So theres a mixture of early and average there! Shes not a big toddler though, and has always been advanced since she started walking.

I know a really small baby who was extremely early with all her milestones, so i cant see size being a factor =)

I know someone's baby who is 14.7lb at 8 months. She's just had her assessment and is developed around the 12-18month mark! She is sooo advanced and doing well so I wouldn't put much stock in to these things no. Abigail CAN stand in her feet - she's just too lazy to lol so it depends on everyone's baby and also things we do with them as everyone parents and stimulates their child differently

:flow:

Weight isn't have anything to do with it I think. My LO was on the 5th centile at birth, She was very dinky, but she's done everything before she should. Her words are shockingly advanced, even has 11 teeth, 2 of which are molars. It's purely down to the child.

My baby is big and has always been a little ahead of time when I read about when things should happen but I think its more to do with her being so overdue than big. She is actually 2and a half weeks older than her age. If she had been born on time all her milestones, smiling, grabbing, babbling etc would probably have been average.

I think it's different for each baby. Among my friends I've noticed that the bigger babies do tend to do stuff sooner.

Both my boys have always been over 100th percentile and slow as heck at everything, lazy lil things

Babies do things in their own time. Unless they are missing the majority of their milestones don't worry about it. Some babies skip rolling and sit, some skip crawling and walk.
