Do dentists do fillings for free for pregnant women?

I had my wisdom tooth out at the beginning of December, for free with the card! Really glad i did now as it's all healed up nicely and not bothering me anymore

I think the only thing you can't have done for free is teeth whitening?? (well that's all my dentist don't allow anyway) It's the same as when on Jobseekers, i've had fillings done whilst on that and they were free too!

Some dentists are a bit funny about doing too much work on pregnant women but you still get a free year after baby has arrived so thats when im taking advantage of it.
You also get free eye tests as well and cheaper glasses aswell, nhs glasses arnt as nasty as they used to be

I didn't think eye tests were free. I paid when I had mine, although I can claim mine back from work anyway and money towards glasses so I didn't really have to pay much anyway.

I have got a check up next week, I don't think I need fillings, I hope not!

I phoned specsavers to check a while back and they said it was free with the card.

I have a tooth abscess that they are currently unable to treat (except for trying antibiotics) as it's under an old filling. I'm so glad that toothache has only started very recently as the thought of having to have this pain for months would be awful. Before this pain I was quite chilled about baby staying put for a while longer.... now I would be happy for him to come out!

Hi im a dental nurse, you do get free dental treatment when pregnant and for 1 year after the birth of ur baby, all treatment is included, root canal, fillings, crowns etc hope this helps everyone x

I get all my treatment free with my dentist - I've had a filling, and injections and all sorts. I only pay for the hygienist.

I've not been able to get seen by an NHS dentist, it's ridiculous. I've literally phoned every NHS dentist listed on their website around my home, work and hubbies work and they all say they're full and have huge waiting lists... grrr!

Can the girls who've had White fillings for free confirm which teeth this was for? I was pretty sure you couldn't get White fillings under the nhs. I've had to pay for mine.

Anything cosmetic won't be for free anything else should.

Temporary fillings are white, they may possibly mean that. Some dentists won't do amalgam fillings on pregnant women but some do.

Anything cosmetic, for example changing your amalgams to composite (the white filling) won't be covered, you'll have to pay for that as that would be a private treatment plan. NHS doesn't cover anything cosmetic. Also having a composite filling when usually you would put an amalgam there. Its usually your upper and lower 3-3 (each central tooth is a number 1, count backwards from there) that you have composite done on the NHS.

Thank you for clearing that up. Can I ask, the NHS exception letter that the card came with said the card also covers our partners. Can you tell me if this means married partners or non married partners too, and if they need to be under NHS? Because my partner is with a private dentist who wants £500 for some non essential work and I was hoping my OH could get it with my card.

Hey ladies i know this is an old thread but another question.. if im only one month pregnant & have a dental app booked next week.. can i claim back all the money paid out at the appointment once i have my medical exemption card further down the line????

No sadly not :/ i didnt need my excemption card to get my free dental care, i just told them i was pregnant and signed if off as that, also took my green notes just in case.. as i didnt have a bump or anything, but they didnt check... they check up on your medical record with the nhs that you are pregnant later on after your works been done i was told xx

You could always get the doctor to write you a note to confirm you are pregnant but only a few weeks pregnant, so therefore you do get free treatment but just dont have the form yet xx

Yeh they should do, I've not had one with this pregnancy but I did with my first pregnancy.

Ah thanks ladies, Ive actually just called up NHS exemption careline & theyve stated I CAN get a refund as long as the appropriate forms are sent within one month of the dentistry being performed...

I cant remember how early in my pregnancy with Harry I got the exemption card?? Will I have to wait until the 12 week scan or anything do u think ladies?? If yeah, i might be cheeky & cancel & re-arrange my dental app for a months time or something

The midwife filled out the form for my exemption card when I was at my first appointment with her at about 8 weeks or so. It then arrivd in the post a few weeks later.

I had 5 done in 3 weeks and all free they aren't allowed to put the metal ones in whilst your pregnant but the ones they give you are fine and don't need replacing, they just aren't AS strong xx

My whole tooth has just cracked in half but im only 4/5 weeks pregnant so wasnt sure if id be able to claim back if i got emergency treatment thats all..guess ill have to just take the chance!
