Do I really have a full supply?

Long story short--we got off to a very bad start breastfeeding after a traumatic birth. LO ended up on formula, which he is allergic to (the milk protein) in addition to my milk which I would pump. I ended up over-feeding him because he would cry and root after feedings, and I stupidly thought he was still hungry. Anyway, the good news is that we are now EBF. My lactation specialist says that I have a full supply. This is based on me pumping 25 oz in 24 hours and my son's weight gain of about 1 oz/day. What has me confused is that he still is fussy after many of the feedings which leads me to believe he's missing that full feeling all the time. It's caused a lot of increased anxiety for me, wondering if I really have enough. If he is gaining that amount, are we ok? And how do I get him to not expect extra food now?

It's normal for babies to have periods of fussiness and it isn't even necessarily that they are hungry, there are all kinds of causes. 1oz a day is a bang on average weight gain, also babies go through growth spurts every couple of weeks at this stage. My son had the same weight gain and he had his fussy times and still does but I know my milk is the best thing for him and a lot of the times when he seems hungry I try and feed him and he has no interest and turns his head away xx

My DD fussed after every feeding for ages and always gained weight well - I have oversupply.

Fussing/rooting is just what little babies do. X

It sounds like you are doing just fine! Sufficient wet diapers would be another sign that things are going ok despite the fussiness.

i agree fussiness doesnt neccessarily mean hes hungry. maybe he just wants to suck! or he could have gas. hes gaining good weight so i wouldnt worry:)

Babies can be fussy and sucking is comforting. Try to pay attention to whether he is really sucking for food or just comfort sucking. The way they suck is different when it's for food versus comfort. There's no need to worry as it sounds like you're doing great!

I was obsessed about my daughter getting enough food. And you know what helped me? I bought a scale (just $50). I would weight her before and after every feeding, and I would chart it over a few days. Once I knew she was getting enough at every feeding (anywhere between 2.5-5 oz) and throughout the day (24-28 oz), my mind was at peace.
