Do we have to switch to forward facing?

She should stay rear facing as long as possible. Its irresponsible to turn her forward facing before 2 IMO. If my 27 month old can rear face comfortably so can a younger baby.

Edit. You SHOULD keep them rear facing to 3.5-4 medically speaking. The cervical region of the spine isn't fully ossified until that age, forward facing too early could cause SEVERE injury, including internal decapitation.

okkkkkkkkkkkkk........... I wonder how many moms you just called irresponsible?

On this site - by implication most of us get called irresponsible for one thing or another every single day (see CIO/weaning age/weaning technique/feeding/going out in weather/not going out in weather/making babies wear clothes/piercing/circumcision... have I missed any of the usual suspects?)

You need to look up your local legislation, you need to dig out the manuals for the car seats you have and look up the weight limits on them - going to get much more sensible answers then than from a group of people from all over the world with different laws, manufacturers, norms of car design that way. Otherwise you're going to get people jumping in saying "This is the law" and it'll turn out it's the law for Outer Mongolia or somewhere not relevant to you...

For what it's worth our forward/rear facing seat says 9kg onwards and you CAN go forward facing with it (equates generally to the 9 month mark but babies vary), 13kg as the upper weight LIMIT for staying rear facing before you have to turn the seat around forward facing... was the best we could afford given the circumstances - so yep, chalk me down to irresponsibility for paying the mortgage! You do the best you can with the circumstances you personally have - irresponsible is not giving a shit or not trying to do that best you can.

turning a child around before 9 months minimum does seem irresponsible to me

I definately agree with this but PP said before 2 years is irresponsible...that's what I don't understand. Perhaps I just read it wrong :dohh:

I get that it's not as common in the UK but that doesn't mean forward facing early isn't safe. Studies prove it isn't safe. Hopefully erf becomes the norm soon.

ERF seats will not fit in my car. My infant seat barely fits. Who's going to give me $15k to buy a new car?

I have a tiny car and can fit her seat just fine. You just need to find I've that fits in your car the best.

This exactly. Irresponsible was maybe not the right word?

Not sure where 9 months came in? (Haven't read every page!). The question mark was over the blanket statement of anyone moving their child before 2 years is irresponsible?

It's irresponsible to me because it's recommended here to do it until 2 for the safety of your child. Science proves it's MUCH safer. Bones in a childs neck are the same all across the globe. My child is just significantly safer in the car than a forward facing 9 month old.

I was just saying 9 months is the age where i dont agree with it.

Ahh I see :) I'm hoping my LO doesn't need moving for a long while yet. He's already 20.5lb/9kg ish and his feet stretch over the bottom, but his head is a way off the top yet and he's perfectly comfortable. He loves his seat and can see via a little mirror on the seat. Fingers crossed at 9 months he'll still be just as happy!

We all have to make decisions to do with our children's safety. Some people are passionate about carseats, and some are passionate about things like anchoring furniture to the wall etc. As long as the carseat manufacturer's guidelines and local legislation is followed, then that is great! It would be safer if everyone drove around rear facing, but that won't really work lol.

ERF is 5 x times safer than FF. What you do is left to you though. have a look at carseat.se for small car fitting erf seats.

It IS irresponsible. Do some research, I don't care if it's offensive. I'm giving straight scientific proof that it's safer. If you understood basic anatomy you'd understand.

I'm not disagreeing with you that it is best as we intend to keep dd rf as long as we can but the use but then again i've been made fun of insulted on these boards today so that's nothing new...

And for your info I understand a lot more than you think...

No need to get nasty. FF seats have been test safe , and rf is even safer (5x). what every one does though is their choice.

If you knew more you wouldn't be arguing with me about it.

Who's arguing???? I just don't think it is fair to people who turn their kids to be called irresponsible? DId I say "oh no ff is just as safe as erf"?...nope don't think I did :flower:
