Do you use dettol spray after preparing chicken/pork?

omg I must be a minger lol our bottles of dettol last ages!

Saying that though- we are very rarely ill lol x

 you minger MF.

My milton (or what ever spray I chose) lasts a while but just the bleach that doesnt.

I cut my meat up on a special plate with a special knife and fork, then i wash it in boiling water and bleach, then i bleach everything, then i dettol, then i wash my hand in scalding water and dettol hand soap... i have issues

I just chuck the knife I use to cut it in the hot water lol. Must work as not been ill lol I wipe the surfaces with the wipes because I dont like using sponges but I only really do it after cooking dinner! No one else really uses the kitchen in the day.

I dont really cook more raw meet though- only a whole roast chicken that goes straight in the oven and mince that goes straight into a pan. I dont think raw meat has ever touched the kitchen sides as I hate it!

Dettol is a lung irritant and dangerous to small animals ( they can't handle the phenols-i would tend to think small children may be similar). I think our society has a high prevelence of cancer due to the over use of chemicals like this. My oh os a phd organic chemist... other than a bottle of bleach, vinegar and detergent we don't have any other chemicals in the house. I'm much more aware of the slow damaging nature of phenol/plastics and other chemicals in our world (thanks to 14 years of his gentle words to me about chemicals).

Google has a plethora of articles on dettol's toxicity: https://scholar.google.com.tr/schol...a=X&ei=xeCHULLeBsjBtAa6jYDoBg&ved=0CCQQgQMwAA
Hot soapy water with the occasional bleach worked for my parents and it's always worked for me too. You know what they say, you need to do what works for you right? :flower:

^ I do wonder because we are not OTT on bleach etc (my house is clean and tidy lol but not bleached- apart from toilet!) we have a dog and the kids always drop food on floor etc etc, my kids are 6 & 8 and never ever had antibiotics or been really ill, I think thats pretty good going :)

No, I don't use any anti-bacterial products because they contain chemicals like triclosan. I do have colour-coded chopping boards (a requirement for my job) and I wash them thoroughly with soap and water after preparing raw meat. My kitchen gets wiped down with a homemade vinegar and bicarb spray.

No I don't. I think using too many disinfectants in your home is only growing yourself resistant bacteria. I just use normal dish detergent/dish washer to clean the surface. I generally use environmental friendly stuff like vinegar/lemonic/ acid based detergents.

Nope I'm a dirty b***h too :haha:

My friend is dettol mad, she sterilises every toy every night!! Her children are always Ill, they are always sick, allergic to everything and both have asthma .. I'm not saying its connected but I'm happy not to worry about germs and bacteria. I do clean the kitchen every day but I'm not obsessive about it.

nope, the kitchen sides get wiped down with a seperate kitchen cloth rinsed in hot water and washing up liquid. I used to use a lot of dettol, but dont bother now. The floors get cleaned with bleach but only about twice a week!

No, I think over use of bleach etc could be a very dangerous thing. All we are doing it helping to create stronger bacteria that is more and more resistant.

I'm also fairly against antibiotics, lemsip etc for the same reason. I do find me and the girls are rarely ill and if I do use drugs they work very quickly

Always with raw meat...my sister got a really awful case of campylobacter, and was unwell for absolutely ages.

I'm not anal about a bit of dirt on my veggies (if they've come from our garden or from organic farm) and the girls are always messing around in the mud...but I don't ever take chances with raw chicken and pork.

I even prepare raw meat (bar beef) with plastic gloves and am very careful about cross contamination.

Nope, we wipe down the sides with hot water and washing up liquid most of the time. I have an anti bac spray but it is normally just for a quick wipe of the sides, it lasts ages.

I don't bleach anything either apart from the toilet, my house isn't spotless but it is clean, I use a floor cleaner when I mop the floors but other than that hot water is what cleans everything here :haha:

ETA - I was ill with Salmonella for over 2 months and it wasn't even food poisoning that caused it, it was cleaning up after a man who was ill at work.

^^ how horrible :( (the salmonella)

I tend to steam clean everything...it's revolutionised my life :haha:

I use a designated chopping board and knife for meat and then wash them twice in v hot soapy water. I use anti bac wipes on the kitchen side, but don't like sprays. I use bleach ffor the toilet and at the moment the kitchen floor because we have mice and it makes me feel gross

I don't think I could cope with mice! :haha:

we are the same when we are ill. I would only intervene if the kids had high temp or were very distressed but I cant actually remember a time when they were that ill?? I normally hold out as long as possible with meds and I always find we recover within 48hours. Maybe we are just lucky, I dont know x
