Do you wash new baby clothes ?

I try not to be too over cautious with my son and with this pregnancy, I was more so with my son and this time I am a bit more relaxed. I am a germ-a-phobe when it comes to most things, but washing new clothes is not one of those things I freak out about. First off, if it has any bacteria on it, it's probably going to die hanging the closet way before my baby ever wears it. Not to mention, you can't protect your child from every spec of dirt and chemical exposure etc. So, with that being said...I don't wash the new clothes, I agree what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger and you don't want to run yourself ragged trying to do stuff that honestly isn't really necessary. At least in my case it never did any harm to DS. As far as used clothes go, I do wash those considering they may smell or have been worn by someone else and it just makes me feel better to wash those!

I washed all my baby cloths and bedding and a couple of days ago I noticed the blankets on the crib had not been washed so did another load and yesterday I realized his swaddle had not been done so another wash for justone Iitem.. I was told that they dye is not good for them and can have allergies to it so wash in perfume less detergent as well as for hygene reasons

I've washed NB and 0-3 sizes and all other fabrics that will be around baby. I even washed plush animals (it says not to wash them), but they are just fine after washing and drying. I washed the stroller cushion too. Most strollers and car seats are rather toxic anyway with all the flame ******ant and other chemicals. It's good to try and wash some of that out.

This is only about adult clothing (can't seem to find the baby one) :dohh: but imagine the amount of people that manhandle all the baby clothes, touching them, feeling them, holding them up to see if they like them.

your sig always makes me think i have a bug on my screen hehe

:haha: i thought the same thing!

I don't always wash the clothes we get as presents - I have a fairly laid back approach to germs - what doesn't kill you makes you stronger etc

Maybe. But I'd rather be OTT about germs than my LO wearing something that has got somebody else's faecal matter on

Lol! I can't believe they starred out that word. Funny!

I washed things because I wanted to. It felt like the first step to mummyhood :)

I'm not so worried about the germs as the chemicals, I read about the fumigation processes on imports and the chemicals sprayed on clothes to keep them wrinkle free and clean on their way to the shops. I want all that gone. If it's not new I also wash it. I am so not a germophobe but newborns are precious.

I will most prob wash everything just because a lot of it has been given to us and has been sitting around for a while so I would just like to make it fresh.

I washed everything for DS1 and then when we got new clothes I never did, so I don't really see the point of doing something I didn't do for him for this one.

I don't tend to wash new clothes for me before I wear them, sometimes if they feel like the need a wash I will.

i have washed all my dds clothes from when she was newborn but i havnt taken the tags of anything new. This is partly due to being able to take things back if they dont fit but mostly due to my massive paranoia of something still going wrong.. Wish i could chill out a bit and get on with things but it just doesnt happen.
We plan on just using the clothes from dd for the first few days, we have about 12 vests and abour 10 sleep suits and a couple of blankets, and then washing the new things.. or giving that job to people who come over to visit!!

I used to work in clothing stores, so I know how dirty and disgusting the general public can be, let alone how filthy the storage areas are in shops. I always wash EVERYTHING I but for myself before wearing it, and is advise other people to as well.

So of course I've washed every single baby item. Every vest, baby grow, sheet, muslin cloth, even head bands. I've done all newborn up to 3 month stuff so far, and will do the bigger items as she starts growing, I would not put her in anything that hasn't been washed. Seriously, people are so gross, and you really don't know who has been touching and trying on an item in the store, it creeps me out!

That's fair enough - I had never read any research about faecal matter on clothes etc until now. I guess it's each to their own

I did just to be safe with my son which turned out to be the right decision. The first 6 weeks he had extremely sensitive skin. If someone was holding him we would have to put a blanket (that had been washed with dreft or a "free" type detergent) between him and the person because he would break out it in a rash from either whatever their clothing was washed or treated with. When he got older, it wasn't an issue but I'm glad I did it when I was pregnant, rather than having to do it all at once after having him when we found out he had this sensitivity.
