I'm thinking of getting into crocheting and was wondering if anyone does it?

Is it easy to pick up/follow?

I can do basic knitting stitches ;)

when i was little i tried to, and i failed lol. i always wanted to make like a blanket , scarf, or a beenie lol.

My nan does and recently taught my mum- she says its harder than knitting but I don't know why, I can't knit or crochet

I crochet! I mostly stick to little, simple projects. Nothing terribly elaborate. I find crocheting much easier than knitting, personally. I leaned how to do both at the same time when I was young, forgot how to knit but kept up with the crocheting on and off. I recently tried to 'relearn' how to knit, and I did get the hang of it again, but I find it much easier to control the tension when I'm crocheting. And I also find it easier to fix my mistakes with crochet. And once you get into it a bit, there are some really cool stitches out there to learn. It's worth a try at the very least!

If you know someone who can crochet, then your first port of call is them :) Both my mom and my MIL can crochet and I've picked up things from both of them :)

If you don't know anyone who can show you, then youtube is a good resource to learn the basics. Search for ways to do a chain stitch (this will be the first stitch you have to learn) and then the next stitches are usually double, half treble and treble. Once you've mastered these, then you can pretty much have a go at anything!

I've sat over many a winter crocheting huge blankets using only treble stitch - ideal as it means you're always warm with it on your lap :haha:

People are always chuffed to get crocheted blankets as presents too :)

Good luck!

If you can knit you can definately learn to crochet! i find it much easier than knitting and it has the added bonus that you can put it down at any point rather than having to finish rows or risk losing count and ruining everything. (That's what happens to me when I knit anyway)! Also it's a lot more forgiving than knitting if you make a mistake, it wont show up as much and the whole thing probably wont unravel. It's also easier to unpick if you do go wrong. Definately check out youtube and good luck!

A 5mm hook is usually a good size to start with :) After that, pick up a few balls of double knit wool and youtube and you're away!

Oh, gosh. Lots of things. You could start with a scarf maybe. Nice and simple and quick. Or maybe just a few squares that could eventually be turned into a blanket?

I'd say the most important thing it so make sure the size of your hook and the weight of your yarn match. Usually there is a symbol on the yarn packaging that recommends what size hook will be good for that yarn. It looks like a little ball of yarn (but you are probably familiar with that from knitting).

Thanks I've got a 5mm hook and will have to check what wool I've got. Ill start in Thursday :)

Good luck! The first thing I ever made was a pram blanket but a 5mm hook should see you well for a while :)

I crochet, much easier than knitting in my opinion! I just don't have enough patience to keep it up and tend to take forever to finish a project now I have the little miss. That said, this new little girl will have some crochet blankets as well and I've got plenty of hats laying around =)

I couldn't pick it up from my MIL, way too confusing. Found it much easier to look up youtube tutorials.

I'd start with a granny square, one of the easiest things to do and after making a bunch of them in different colours you can stick them together for a lovely blanket. This is the website I found most useful, Crochet Mania. If you follow the youtube link and look through all her other tutorials you'll find a section for crochet stitches as well, they're explained in a way that's very easy to follow =)

Uploaded a photo of DD1 as a newborn, under 2 of the blankets I made for her and a matching crochet hat =)
Moses basket is waiting with the same hat and top blanket for DD2!

I crochet, and I love it. I find knitting to be quite fiddly and definitely much more difficult than crochet, and takes longer too to finish something. Plus with crocheting you will usually just need the one hook size, whereas I find knitting can use a few different types/sizes of needles for just one pattern which frustrates me. I do prefer the look of knitted stuff as opposed to crochet though, I will admit.

Definitely agree with others about the 5mm crochet hook, and generally you will want a DK or worsted weight yarn (so 8ply or 10ply) for that size hook. If you are wanting to make soft toys, use the smallest hook available (I'd recommend a 3mm or 2.5mm) because even if the pattern suggests a bigger one you can end up with little holes that you can see the stuffing through and you don't want that :)

Two of the best channels on YouTube for crochet tutorials are: tjw1963 and Bethintx1 - they go just the right pace for a beginner and have lots of videos with great patterns too. And a great website for patterns is https://www.ravelry.com - there are some truly gorgeous patterns on there. I do find that some of the better patterns are ones that you pay for but it's so worth it as some are so cute.

Good luck and have fun!

That blanket is gorgeous! And happy due date!

I am utterly useless with anything that involves a thread and a needle of any sort. unfortunately. I was at primary school and sec school and am still now. (yesterday I wanted to sew a hole in a sock) a sock(a warm wooly one) and after twenty minutes the hole was open again.. so much for that.
I would like to be a bit more talented on that scheme(just normal) but I have got two left hands when it comes to sewing/knitting or anything related...

(I had those little crocheting dolls as a kid, no I never got how to use them. We made those "friendship bracelets" mine were and still are full of holes when I do one and I can only do the basic pattern.
We had crocheting at school and close to the end of the lesson I managed to have a line of 20 , but I could never raise the attention of the teacher to show me how to turn.
I once wanted to sew something out of a kids magazine, so I plundered the fabric of my mother, and proceeded, only to see that I did it the wrong way around(for a sailor collar kind of thing) and I ruined a perfect piece of fabric. ....

I started doing crochet when I was pregnant, I learned from YouTube, it was realy easy to pick up. I made LO a Blanket, a few pairs of booties and a beanie hat :) I havnt done it since having LO though as I have no time now!

How ambitious is a snowman? 2 balls and the detail for the face?

It shouldn't be too hard, but you'll need to know how to increase and decrease. Increasing is pretty simple usually just doing 2 stitches into a stitch on the previous row instead of one but decreasing is alittle trickier. Should be able to find decent instructions on youtube. That's what I had to do, I've been crocheting for years but only worked out how to decrease properly last month! A snowman will be a nice winter project!

I can do the chain stitch but how on earth do I start another row?

Most of the YouTube videos are not very easy to follow :(
