Does anyone crochet?

It might be easier if you can get a real live person to show you! Do you know anyone who can crochet? But basically you do a row of chain, then you enter the hook into the stitch next to the hook, put the wool round the needle, pull back through the stitch, you should have two loops on the hook, wool round hook again, and pull through both loops, then repeat in the next stitch so you'll be working from right to left whereas the chain you would be going left to right. This is double crochet, or if you're american, single crochet! Hope that helps but probably you'll need someone to show you!

After you've done your chain, you start working 'back' on the chain with single crochets

I have recently started to crochet because i thought it would be ace to be able to give the babies something i had made them :) I learnt off youtube as there are soooooo many tutorials. Once you have got it it's really easy. I struggled with tension at first so did loads of granny squares to practise. I haven't done anything too elaborate yet and have just stuck to blankets. I'm hoping once i master the various stitches i will be able to progress from following youtube to following actual patterns. Looking at those at the mo just boggles me

Good luck hun :) xxx

Thanks all!

I'm going to look at all the links tonight ad try a granny square.

Evie has a taken a very fond liking to one of my balls of wool tho :haha:

Ahh, well there's normal crochet and then there's crochet-with-a-toddler. I'll let you decide which one is more fun!

Crochet with a toddler is near impossible!! I've given up a long while ago.

Crochet with a toddler or a cat is pretty much a no go!

I can only crochet when LO is in bed, as she likes to play peekaboo with whatever I'm working on or wrap the wool around our dog. :dohh:

Wait until you start getting a permanent dent in your finger from holding your hook! Takes a few weeks to toughen up :) How are you getting on?

Not too bad. I've been doing the basic stitches etc and turning my work (which is tricky)

Think I'm doing ok but have been finding it hard to get the tension right, either too tight or really loose

Havnt actually made anything yet lol

Your tension will improve over time - practice makes perfect!

Tension is a bugger, and it really does come with experience rather than practice. Don't pay too much attention to it, and just keep at it. You'll find that after a while the stitches come easier, without thinking and you'll automatically start holding it in such a way that the tension becomes less of a problem.

I remember just starting, it was utterly hilarious watching my 'work' (ie. several layers of stitches on top of each other, but not quite a square). The missed stitches, the ones I hooked in wrong, the tension difference ... it's all normal and *will* improve the longer you keep it up.

The tension bit will really come quickly. I found it was just a case of finding a way to hold the wool that was comfortable for me and not trying to copy how the ppl hold it on the vids xxx
