Alot of my friends and family do it this way and have even been told by their midwives that its ok.

They boil the water, let it cool in bottles and just add powder when needed and feed it to LO at room temperature. Ive heard it needs to be made with hot water. It would be so much easier to do it the way they do it but wouldn't wanna make LO sick. Is it ok to do it this way?

:flower:

i used to make the bottles up to 2/3rds with cool boiled wated then i would boil the kettle when he was hungry and top the bottle up the last 1/3rd and add the formular it would be the perfect temp for him. hope this helps im so glad someone told me about it it made life so much easier than waiting for bottles to cool with a hungry angry baby haha

So would that be the same as making with cool water then putting in the microwave?

Thanks hun. Just looking into all of my options :flower:

It is not ok regardless of what midwives say. it is the formula powder that needs sterilising, not the water! Therefore the water needs to be 70 degrees centigrade or above when the water and the powder are mixed. This kills any salmonella type bugs that may have entered the powder during the manufacturing process. I am sure this is also what the packaging instructions ought to say. Microwaving bottles is also unsafe. Although not strictly recommended, it would be safer to make up a few bottles with hot water, then keep them in the fridge and warm when needed. That is better than making up bottles with cooled water which you absolutely should avoid doing at all costs.

yeah i wouldnt warm bottles in microwave i was also told this is not safe could get hot spots and burn baby

Ive always made bottles up with hot water. Cooled them then put in the back of the fridge. I then microwaved to warm up and gave it a good shake. I don't have a problem with using the microwave to warm milk up. Never had a problem with doing it this way.

Just wanted to know about using cooled boiled water.

To be honest I dont think its as bad as some might say to use cooled boiled water to make up feeds. The UK is one of the only contries in the world where it says on formula tins to use 70c water. In the rest of Europe, USA, Australia etc they all use cooled boiled water to make up feeds. In fact come september Hipp organic are changing thier powder formula milks to include extra probiotic cultures, and the label will read that due to these delicate cultures, it must be made with 40c water. I emailed Hipp and questioned them on this issue and they said that manufacturing processes have improved dramatically and there in very minimal risk of contamination, and the fact that all other "first world" European countries have always made formula with cooler water. xxx

I use cool boiled water to make up feeds for lo and she's been fine, theres a lot of things they tell you not to do these days inc making up feeds in advanced but when you have a baby it's just not practical in reality!

I have 4 children oldest being eleven and youngest being two weeks old. I have always made bottles this way and never with any of my children have I had issues.

What i don't get is why do all of the US instructions say to use cool boiled water, add powder and then warm if needed?

xx

Its not just US instructions that say this. Europe, Australia and New Zealnd formulas also say this. Think its just the UK that doesnt. xxx

I use SMA Staydown, and it has to be made with cold water (as per the instructions) - I have no idea why that powder is ok to make with cold water though. It even says on the box the powder isn't sterilised so make sure the instructions are followed  But with DS1 I used to just add boiling water to a load of bottles, leave on the side then add powder as and when needed. (So the same as what your saying your friends do) - it was very easy. I know it's not what the instructions said though x

I also used SMA Staydown, confuses me aswell :0/ Apparently the make an exception for that milk..

I do exactly the same as mammy2oaklen! never had any problems - it is quick and handy! I store my cool boiled water in a sterile container. :) x

I have been ff my LO since stopping bf at 12 weeks....i boil fresh water and pour into.sterilised bottles and leave at RT sealed and ready to.use. i just add the powder to the cooled.water.in bottle when needed and sometimes warm slightly in hot water in jug but sometimes at feed it at RT.

I ummed and aaahed about fully making up bottles incl powder and put at back of.fridge. But i have a friend who is a neonatal.nurse and she says they do the cooled boiled.water and add powder when needed at the hospital...i thought if its ok for them then its ok for me.

Had no problems with LO

I've been using cooled boiled water too. I've just started to use regular filtered water now that DS is about a year old and I'm starting to switch him over to cow's milk.

So glad to read this!

I don't understand why you would sterilise the bottles, and then go and put un-sterile milk in them? You may as well just wash the bottles in hot water and not bother sterilising. I always found it mixed easier with hot water anyway.

my powder says it has to be 70 degrees C - I put 60ml cooled boiled water in then top it to 210 with boiled water - this way it's over 70 degrees but you don;t have to leave the kettle to cool for half an hour. I still have to cool it down in iced water and feed LO but it justsaves a lot of clock watching and worrying by having 5 bottles made with 60ml cooled water in and being able to top them up as needed

also in addition - this is just my opinion but i really believe that they just try to make verything as difficult as possible with regards to formula feeding because you aren;t breast feeding.
