Does anyone make feeds with cool boiled water?

I don't understand why you would sterilise the bottles, and then go and put un-sterile milk in them? You may as well just wash the bottles in hot water and not bother sterilising. I always found it mixed easier with hot water anyway.

I always thought sterilising was to make sure that bottles are 100% clean with no potential bugs left over from the PREVIOUS feed. We are the only country that uses 70c water to mix with formula. Even in other countires that sterilise feeding equipment such as Australia and most of Europe, they dont add what you would call "sterile" formula to the bottles as they make thier feeds up with water between room temp and 50c. xx

I wonder why they started with the rule though. Do you think alot of babies were getting sick?

From what I have heard there have been a couple of documented incidences of babies becoming sick and dying from harmful pathogens found in formula milk. But I think these were in Europe and they still dont use 70c+ water to make up their formula.... Im guessing that the World Health Organisation guidelines of 70c+ water reflects the fact that powder formula could never be manufactured in a way that the powder remains 100% sterile, even though the manufacturers must conform to the strictest standards of hygeine. Overall babies becoming seriously ill from contaminated formula is very rare. xx

Also even though I premake bottles using 70c+ water, I cant really understand the significance of 70c as I thought that bacteria was only killed off when water reaches 100c? Hence why potentially contaminated water and water for young babies needs to be boiled first.... Otherwise why not just heat it to 70c if this kills bacteria?

I just use nursery water straight from the jug. Ive never boiled water to this day. I also stopped sterilizing around 5 months.I even make all of her bottles in the morning, and leave them in the fridge until needed. It's never been an issue, Ive only heard of it on this site, and by then my LO was not a newborn anymore and I wasn't worried about her getting sick. I just had a lot more to worry about than stressing even more because occasionally a baby gets an upset tummy.

*ducks*

It's to protect against a very small risk. It's like eating a runny egg when pregnant. It is very, very unlikely to make Lo ill, but if it does the consequences are serious.

I am living in South Africa and over here noone has ever heard of this 70degree thing either.

On my formula tin it states that the water must be body temperature or under so that you don't kill the live cultures in the formula.

That aside........I have been making bottles by boiling water, pouring into bottles, leaving on the side and putting formula in when needed from birth. I heat the bottle up in a warmer most of the time to feed once it's made.

And when I have my next baby in the UK, I will do the same regardless of what the 'guidelines' say.

What i'm saying is the milk powder isn't sterile anyway, as long as the bottles are physically clean from the previous feed what's the point in serilising if you're going to dump a load of unsterile milk powder in the bottom.

I guess its just an extra measure to make sure the bottles are 100% clean. I think in the US they only sterilise bottles before the first use, and their babies are fine. xxx

I have made bottles with cooled boiled water and added powder when I need too since lo was about a month old. He's been fine on it and prob because I did it early his tummy is used to it.

I still sterilise because that's getting rid of bacteria in mllk from previous feeds. If I just washed the bottles there could be formula still lingering in the bottle as I make he next feed and the next ans so on. Since milk goes off within two hours if I didn't sterilise the bottle could have traces of gone off milk still present.

The water is sterile when goin into the sterile bottle so will remain sterile even when it cools. The only problem is when powder is added its not hot to sterilise the milk powder. But as long as not cooled and stored or heated and drank immediately it's fine.

Dunno where I saw it but in the guidelines of making up formula it states that this method is actually ok

To be honest I think using cool boiled water is ALOT more common in the UK than people like to make out. I always see women adding premeasured formula powder to premeasured cold (Im guessing previously boiled) water at baby groups. There were 2 ladies that did this at a group just today in fact.
I belive on starting as you mean to go on, so I premake fully and store in the fridge with DD2, but I do intent to make with cool boiled water for DD3 when she is born, as we will be using Hipp this time, and from September when it's formula changes, it will be in th instructions to make it with 40c-50c water (so Im gonna fill sterilised bottles with water, leave on the side and when baby wants a feed warm the water a bit in the bottle warmer, then add the powder, shake and feed). xxx

We have a jug on our bench that we put the water in after it's boiled. When she was younger, we would measure water into a bottle, microwave just the water, then add the powder. I think she was about 6 mo when we started using just room-temperature water (after it had been boiled).

I don't really know much about this, i let boiled water cool till it stops steaming, but not sure what temp that is  still to hot for baby to drink, and still hot enough to burn me a little  I then let bottle cool and either feed or store in fridge and warm up in a bottle warmer later (though always within 24 hours)
sorry i couldn't be more help.

I used to make up bottles of boiled water, cool then put in the fridge. I would add formula and use the bottle warmer to heat.

Now I am reconsidering with this baby as it is the formula that is supposed to be sterile too?

My daughter was fine with that method though, I guess I will keep a watch on this thread! x

Generally speaking you can just add the formula shortly before you give it to baby, and it's all okay. If you use the microwave, you should heat the water and then add formula, but with pretty much every other way of heating it's okay to add formula first then heat.

my LO has drank her milk at room temp from when she was born because I had to stay in hospital for a while & they didn't warm the milk up. I always boil the kettle & fill the bottles with just water in advance & then leave them to cool. so when LO needs one, all I have to do is add powder :flower: x

I am a new mummy and new to FF too and found the whole thing so confusing!

we have started off boiling the water and putting into the sterile bottles and then i keep in fridge and add the Aptamil when needed and heat in a warmer to take the fridge temp off  i really dont know if we are doign the right or wrong thing- i went off the advice of my mum!

Personally I would warm the water in the warmer before adding the powder. Not only will the powder mix better the warmer the water but also once the powder is added bacteria can start to multiple, especially at warm temps. So if you add the powder after the water is warmed you can feed your baby immeadiatly. xxx
