sorry girls im flapping here:wacko:...been diagnosed with gd and struggling with sugar levels they seem over 7.8 1hr after food (8-9) and im soooooooooo worried this wont go after birth:cry:........im veggie and struggling with what to eat as i dont eat eggs either. My diet consists of bread, pasta spuds all of which are a no no, does this GD go once baby is out??? thanks girls x

Sorry to hear that.

My diabetes midwife told me that in 99% of cases, GD does go after the birth.
So fingers crossed it does go for you :)

As for diet, you can try to have bread, as long as it's granary or seeded or brown...also pasta, wholemeal and potatoes are ok too. It's all trial and error though.
Instead of bread, I now have Ryvita as bread is a definite no no for me.

Brown or Basmati rice is ok and small portions of potatoes are also ok for me.

I don't eat meat at the moment as I can't stand it (apart from chicken on occasion) and I've gone off eggs completely too.
It is difficult trying to find foods to eat but I mainly have soups, lots of veg, jacket potatoes, beans, brown rice, wholemeal pasta with a sauce, rice cakes, oatcakes, nuts, yoghurts (Shape Zero)....I can sometimes have a packet of crisps (Quavers or Skips). It's a pretty boring diet but hopefully not for long.

Hope this helps :flower:

Dont worry it should go away! Its the placenta that causes the problems, although it does mean you are more at risk to type 2 diabetes in later life.

Ive just gone onto a little night time insulin and the nurse even told me to stop taking it as soon as I went into labour. Ive been taking my blood sugars since I was 16 weeks and its only the past couple of weeks Ive had a problem which is clearly linked to baby getting bigger and the placenta working harder.

I was affraid my GD would hang around forever too..thankfully it has gone now. Hope yours does aswell :)

Thanks everyone!!! its worrying though isnt it that it wont go afterwards!!! im praying it does.........as for my food i will swap my usual white bread, pasta for wholewheat variety as this is what i live off..as ideally meat, eggs etc is what i should eat but cant being veggie....but there is no way i will be eating meat again just to keep carbs low or eggs=yuck!!!...xx

I had insulin dependant GD and just went for my postpartum 2 hour GTT and it came back normal!! So happy!! :happydance: In most cases, it goes away! I really hope it does the same for you!!

Although we still are at higher risk to develop type 2 diabetes later on in life. My doctor told me it's really important to keep a healthy weight and eat healthy to reduce the risks. xx

I couldn't tolerate any wheat based products, rice, breakfast cereal etc. whether wholemeal, granary or not. I started off veggie but did start eating meat, but that's just me. Muller Light yogurts worked for me as did nuts and avocados.

I'm still waiting for my post partum GTT, so I don't know if my GD has gone away yet, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Mine had gone 2 days PP.

Katie suffered for 5 days post delivery but she is bob on now.

Just a quick update, I checked my own blood sugars after a fairly high carb lunch yesterday (6 weeks after LO was born) and my reading was 5.9 1 hour after eating with no exercise - so I guess that's a good indication that it has gone :) I still have to wait for the post partum GTT though to get an accurate confirmation :)

It usually does go away, or at least lay dormit until your next child or you get struck with type 2...I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my son 8 years ago. I thought it went away and fell ill about 3 years ago while I was in the hospital I was diagnosed with Type 2...Now I take insulin 4 times a day and will be on pump therapy with the next baby !

Good luck to you and take the best possible care of you and your LO..
